Season to celebrate American playwrights
The 2006-2007 season of Theatre Simpson will celebrate the work of the American playwright beginning with “One Flea Spare” in October.
“One Flea Spare” by Naomi Wallace will be directed by Jennifer Ross Nostrala, and held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 6-7 and 1 p.m. on Oct. 8 in Pote Theatre of the Blank Performing Arts Center. Wallace, a Kentucky native, plunges her audience into 17th century London in the midst of the Great Plague. With the quarantine on their home about to be lifted, the Snelgrave's are horrified to discover two intruders, a sailor and a young girl, infiltrate their home. The quarantine is reinstated and these unlikely companions must come to terms with their condition and each other.
The season continues with “Standing on My Knees,” written by John Olive and directed by Ann Woldt in Barnum Studio Theatre. The show will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29-30 and Dec. 1-3 and at 1 p.m. Dec. 3. A powerful and affecting drama, “Standing on My Knees” is the story of a gifted young poet struggling to come to terms with the schizophrenia which is undermining her art and life. This contemporary play is an intimate character study examining the effects of metal illness.
“Rumors,” written by Neil Simon and directed by Tom Woldt, will also join the 2006-2007 line-up. Held in conjunction with the 10th annual Simpson High School Theatre Festival March 26, the show will be at 7:30 p.m. March 23-24 and at 1 p.m. March 25 in Pote Theatre. With “Rumors,” America's premier comic playwright delighted audiences with this farce of hilarious proportion. Four couples are at the townhouse of a deputy New York City mayor and his wife to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary. The party never begins, however, because the host has shot himself in the head (it's only a flesh wound) and his wife is missing. His lawyer's cover up gets progressively more difficult to sustain as the other guests arrive and nobody can remember who has been told what about whom. Doors slam and hilarity abounds as the couples get more and more crazed, until the much-too-late arrival of the police. A contemporary farce by an American comic genius!
The season will conclude with student-produced performances during Festival 2007: The American Regional Theatre in Barnum Studio Theatre at 7:30 p.m. April 13-14 and at 1 p.m. April 15.
