A special Blessing of the Animals service giving thanks to the role of animals in our lives will be held Sunday, October 16, at Simpson College. The service, conducted by the Rev. Angela Gafford, Simpson chaplain and director of the Religious Life Community, will be held in front of Smith Chapel at 4 p.m. This will be the second year Gafford has led the service. Last year’s gathering attracted some 40 pets and their owners. “It’s a great service, especially for children,” she said. To Gafford, “This 10-minute service allows us to give thanks for the special meaning pets bring into our world.”
Traditionally, Blessing of the Animals” services were held on or near St. Francis of Assisi Day October 4 by agricultural communities seeking to recognize the role animals play as pets, as helpmates with labor, and, also, for the food they provide, Gafford said. All ages are invited to bring their pets and animals to the service. Pets must be leashed or contained in carriers or trailers to protect them and others. Children should be accompanied by an adult.
Donations for Kiya Koda Animal Shelter will be accepted at the event. Cat food and cat litter are always needed. Refreshments for all creatures will follow the brief service. For more information, contact Gafford at 961-1716 or e-mail: gafford@simpson.edu.
