Commencement 2005 activities and speaker

Information about graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 21, 2005.

A mailing will be sent to all students and parents, but in the meantime, here is some basic information.

Baccalaureate services wil be at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at the United Methodist Church, 307 West Ashland. A reception will immediately follow for graduates, their families and friends in the Matthew Simpson Room of College Hall.

There is a breakfast on Saturday, May 21 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. in Pfeiffer Dining Hall for graduating seniors, their families and guests, free of charge.

Commencement will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 21 in the Cowles Gymnasium. Richard M. Cohen, Simpson alumnus and author of the memoir Blindsided will be our commencement speaker.

After commencement, weather permitting, there are reception tables outdoor for each of the five divisions of the college as well as adult learning. Rain site is Hopper Gymnasium.

The five divisions of the college are:

Humanities-English, history, foreign languages, religion and philosophy
Fine arts-art, theatre arts and music
Education and social sciences-education, physical education, sports administration, psychology, sociology and criminal justice
Policy studies-communication studies, political science, managment, accounting, economics and international management
Sciences and mathematics-biology, environmental science, chemistry, mathematics and computer science

Check with your graduating senior (or family member) about meeting at the appropriate division table.

The reception is a good time for picture-taking, hugs and farewells all around, and even some visits with alumni. This usually winds down by 12:30 p.m. and graduates may depart for family or other group get-togethers.
