Simpson names new academic dean

Simpson College has named Steven J. Griffith, professor in the department of theater at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, as vice president and dean for academic affairs.

Griffith has been with Gustavus Adolphus College, a private liberal arts college in St. Peter, Minn., since 1979, serving as an instructor, assistant professor and associate professor in the department of theater and dance. Previously, Griffith was an instructor at Agnes Scott College in Georgia. In addition to teaching, Griffith has served as a special assistant to the president, associate dean for faculty development and associate dean of Gustavus Adolphus. He has also served as chairperson of the department of theater and dance.

“Steven will bring a rich mix of academic and administrative experience to his new role,” said John Byrd, president. “During his visit to campus he impressed the faculty and other members of the Simpson community with his enthusiasm for the college’s mission. We’re looking forward to his contributions toward a stronger Simpson.”

Griffith holds a bachelor of arts in theater from Gustavus Adolphus College, a masters of fine arts degree in theater design from the University of Minnesota and is currently completing his doctorate in higher education policy and administration from the University of Minnesota.

“I’m excited about joining Simpson College,” said Griffith. “My experience has been at high quality, small colleges and at its core, I think that’s what Simpson is all about. I’m looking forward to working with president Byrd and the entire Simpson community.”

Griffith will begin July 1st. He replaces dean Bruce Haddox who is retiring.
