South Central Iowa Science & Engineering Fair at Simpson

The 19th annual South Central Iowa Science and Engineering Fair (SCISEF) will
be held on Saturday, March 19 on Simpson College's Indianola campus.

Lunch will be served in the college's dining hall and all participants will receive a SCISEF 2005 T-shirt to commemorate their experience.

SCISEF is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.  SCISEF is designed to help students explore science, while learning communication and research skills.

All students in grades 6-12 who are interested in science and enrolled in public, private or home schools in Iowa's south-central region are eligible to enter SCISEF. Twenty-one counties are assigned to the fair and the remaining counties that aren't covered by the eastern fair are also eligible to participate.  Participating in local and conference science fairs before entering SCISEF is encouraged, but such prior participation is not a requirement.  Competitors in this fair may exhibit at the state science fair in Ames, if they wish, but are not eligible to compete in other affiliated regional fairs.

The local SCISEF fair is organized into two categories with two divisions in each category.  The categories of exhibits are Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences.  Within each of these categories, entries are judged within a Senior Division (grades 9-12) and a Junior Division (grades 6-8).  Team competition is available at the Junior and Senior Division levels.  A seminar paper competition is available at the senior level.

Each participant will receive a participation award.  In addition, the two Senior High Division winners and a teacher-sponsor will receive a trip to the 2004 International Science and Engineering Fair in Portland, Oregon, May 9-15, and $500 college scholarships to the college of their choice upon enrollment.  (Senior Division winners may exhibit at the State Science Fair, but will not be eligible for the same International Science and Engineering Trip Award.)

Second and third place winners in the Senior Division will receive trophies, and $200 and $100 college scholarships, respectively.  The top five winners in each category of both the Senior and Junior divisions will receive medals and a certificate.  There are also many other specialty awards and prizes for both Junior and Senior divisions.
