Former high school librarian to share story of life as a transgender
Debra Davis, a retired high school librarian for the Minneapolis public schools, came out as a transgender woman in 1998 and has since shared her experience at more than 800 colleges throughout the country. Davis will present “Reading Rainbows: An Evening with a Retired Transgender Librarian” at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 31 in the Jordan Lecture Hall in the Carver Science Center.
Davis, who is the executive director of the Gender Education Center, serves as a role model and mentor for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community with education, acceptance and advocacy. During her visit to Simpson, Davis will share her experiences as a teacher for 32 years and as a transgender high school librarian. She will inspire with her story of overcoming self-esteem issues and the realization that everyone is different.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (515) 961-1608.
