The Rev. Lester Small to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day
The Rev. Lester Small will give his speech, “In Honor of a Birthday and a Person,” for the Martin Luther King Jr. observance at 1 p.m. on Jan. 16 in Smith Chapel at Simpson College in Indianola. Small will explore how King and Rosa Parks united the entire world through their words, deeds and a dream.
Small is an assistant pastor at Valley Community Church at the Eddie Davis Community Center in West Des Moines, which provides education, recreation, family services, job training, elderly services and referral services to citizens in the metropolitan area and throughout Polk, Warren, Dallas and Madison counties. Also an activist, singer and actor, Small also serves as a youth advisor for children in his neighborhood, the Riverbend district of Des Moines.
Small replaces Attorney Romonda Belcher-Ford, who was originally scheduled to speak, but due to her father’s death and family obligations is not be able to give the address.
The event will kickoff the college’s Ounce of Doing project, which was created at Simpson five years ago to remember the works of Martin Luther King Jr. and address the issues and concerns of justice and fairness in our society.
With the Ounce of Doing program, students participate in education, housing, immigration, health care, violence, hunger, criminal system and discrimination to begin an action plan. Each group's action plan will be presented at a dinner in February and voted on to decide which plan will receive money to proceed with the project to build a sense of community through unity, service and collective responsibility. Individuals and groups are welcome to sign up to fund any of these projects.
The event is free and open to the public, held at Smith Chapel on the corner of Clinton Avenue and Buxton Street in Indianola.
