When two lovers wittingly test the loyalty of their “true” loves, the result is a humorous look at the lengths lovers will take to discover their true heart.
Such a tale will be brought to the stage Feb. 17 through 19 when the Simpson College music department presents the spring opera production of “Cosi fan tutte” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Barnum Studio Theater in the Blank Performing Arts Center in Indianola.
“It’s a delightful comedy and it’s one of the great operas,” said director Robert L. Larsen. “It has become one of the world’s most popular.”
With the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth on Jan. 27, Larsen chose this particular opera to pay tribute to the famous composer. In addition to this special anniversary, Larsen said the opera lends itself to this year’s music students because of the demanding pieces.
“I have singers this year for whom the score is right,” he said. “I like to think the productions we do contribute to their development as students and musically.”
The performers find themselves in duets, trios and quartets, interweaving their voices in a way only Mozart could accomplish.
“It’s the greatest ensemble opera ever written,” said Larsen. “Singers can maintain their own vocal ability within the ensembles.”
“Cosi fan tutte” was widely ignored in the 19th century because the subject matter was considered too controversial. It takes a look at relationships and whether women change their feelings too often. The title is sometimes translated as “women are like that,” but generally means “they all do it.” Mozart often chose topics for his operas that were not appropriate.
“The Victorian era thought it was absurd,” said Larsen. “But it reflects an awful lot about our society today.”
The Simpson College performance of “Cosi fan tutte” has been designed with a fresh, new twist. Usually set in a long-gone century, this performance will be set in 2006 Manhattan.
The set, designed by Steve McLean, takes place in a Manhattan apartment and features a roof garden and a New York bar. Costumes feature modern, designer clothing.
The performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18 with a 2 p.m. performance on Sunday, Feb. 19. Tickets are $10 each for general reserved seating. For tickets, call (515) 961-1637 between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
“It will be full of surprises, both musically and dramatically,” said Larsen.
