Farnham Galleries will feature “Heroic Places in 2-D Spaces,” a collection of paintings by Jeni Reeves, Thursday, Feb. 3 through Friday, Feb. 25.
Reeves will be on campus Thursday, Feb. 24 for a slide presentation at 9:30 a.m. in Camp Lounge in the Brenton Student Center and a gallery talk at 2 p.m. in the Farnham Galleries.
Jeni Reeves’ paintings thematically represent her concern for culture and environment, while her illustrations reflect her interest in ethnology, folklore and history. Reeves’ paintings have been shown in numerous solo exhibitions in Iowa, New York, and Kenya. Most recently, her show titled “Facing the Cradle” appeared at the African American Museum and Cultural Center of Iowa in Cedar Rapids, and “Statements and Stories” was exhibited for Project Art at the University of Iowa. Reeves’ work has also been featured in galleries in mid-town Manhattan and at the British Council Gallery in Nairobi, Kenya.
Reeves has illustrated a collection of children’s books in addition to a series of non-fiction books on the American Civil War, Fred Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Pocahontas, Kenya, Russia and the Muslim month of Ramadan.
Regarding artistic motivation, Reeves states: “Contrasts and harmonies feed heroic narratives through time and place, but our common humanity binds us all in spite of apparent differences.”
Farnham Galleries are located on the third floor of Mary Berry Hall. Hours are Monday -Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by appointment at 515.961.1761.
