Simpson SIFE students place first

The Simpson College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) returned to Indianola as winners after participating in the Minneapolis SIFE USA Regional Competition on April 5.

The event was one of 21 United States regional competitions being held in April. According to Dr. Tom Schmidt, chair of the department of business administration and economics at Simpson, and SIFE adviser; the Simpson SIFE team presented seven projects at the competition, but the one that caught the judges’ attention was The Storm Cellar. The Storm Cellar is a pizza cafe and game room located on the north side of the Indianola Square. The Storm Cellar is open to the public and is quickly becoming the place in Indianola to hold birthday and sports team parties.

SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on over 1,800 university campuses and in more than 40 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills and business ethics.

After presenting a report of their community outreach projects to a panel of business leaders, the Simpson College SIFE team was named SIFE USA Regional Champion 2005 in the overall competition. Projects were judged on creativity, innovation and effectiveness. Also at the regional competition, the team was a finalist in the SIFE USA National Free Market Economics Competition sponsored by AFLAC and finalist in the SIFE USA Entrepreneurship Competition sponsored by Sam’s Club.

The Simpson SIFE team will advance to the national level of competition at the SIFE USA National Exposition May 22-24 in Kansas City, MO.
