Simpson College and the Lilly Initiative seek to identify students who are strong candidates for leadership in a religious community. The Lilly Initiative works closely with the Religious Life Council and the chaplains to accomplish this goal.
The Lilly Initiative has two main objectives to help students explore religious leadership.
- To establish a broader set of opportunities for all students to consider the multiple ways they can serve a church or other religious communities through both ordained and lay ministry. Included in this approach are programs that introduce student to ministry options as well as programs that provide experiences to help them discern God's calling in their lives. In addition, there are programs that enable a number of students to engage with professionals in various ministry settings.
- To create a pre-seminary mentoring structure for students who are seriously considering post-graduate seminary education. The pre-seminary group is for students in whom the chaplains, religion faculty or Lilly staff see gifts for ministry and for students who already identify themselves as "pre-seminary."
