New Course Development -

Faculty members are invited to propose a new course that helps fulfill the goals of the Lilly Initiative. The course might occur during May Term or a regular semester, and could be a Senior Colloquium.  A proposed course may be a redevelopment of an existing course to include service-learning as a key pedagogical component, or a completely new course that explores the notion of vocation in a variety of ways related to the discipline being addressed. We are especially interested in courses that can become a part of Simpson's ongoing curriculum.

The Lilly Initiative has a number of resources to help faculty develop new courses, including discipline-specific and general publications from CampusCompact and other organizations, access to conferences with colleagues as well as special workshps with service-learning and vocational experts.  If you have an idea for a course and would like a conversation partner as you begin to conceive of a grant, please phone Jan Everhart at 1243, or e-mail everhart@simpson.edu.  We have awarded five course-development grants to date and can share sample proposals and soon, sample syllabi to help your own thinking process. For a number of links to sites that offer resources for service-learning, please click here.

For a course-development grant application contact Jan Everhart (everhart@simpson.edu; ext 1243) or click here to download the Course Development application.

Faculty Advisor Training -

The faculty and CCS staff advisor training program (14 different individuals each year) will help participants to develop “deep listening” skills that help engage students in conversations about meaning, purpose and calling in their lives.  In order to become better equipped to listen to and mentor students, faculty will have the opportunity to identify and articulate their own sense of passion and vocation.  They will explore how their calls developed and how they sustain passion for their work.  This intentional reflection will provide the framework for asking students the “right questions” to engage them in a helpful reflective process that can lead students to identify their own gifts and passion. The training will include two day-long workshop and monthly gatherings, as well as shared reading. A stipend acknowledges the time commitment involved in this work. Speak to Jan Everhart (everhart@simpson.edu) if you are interested in this opportunity.
