Course Development Grants

Faculty members are invited to propose a new course that helps to fulfill the goals of the Lilly Initiative. The course might occur during May Term or the regular semester, and could be a Senior Colloquium. Proposed courses might be the redevelopment of an existing course to include service-learning as a key pedagogical component, or might be a completely new course that explores the notion of vocation in a variety of ways related to the discipline being addressed. We are especially interested in courses that can become a part of Simpson's ongoing curriculum.

The Lilly Initiative has a number of resources to help faculty develop new courses, including discipline-specific and general publications from CampusCompact and other organizations, access to conferences with colleagues, and the presence of service-learning and vocational experts on campus for special workshops. If you have an idea for a course and would like a conversation partner as you begin to conceive of a grant, please phone Jim Hayes at 1281, or e-mail jim.hayes@simpson.edu.  We have awarded seven course development grants to date and can also share sample proposals and soon, sample syllabi to help your own thinking process. For more resources on service-learning go to the Service Hub website.
