LIBRARY DATABASES

  • LIBRARY CATALOG - To search for books on a particular topic, use a Subject or a Keyword Search. To search for books at other libraries use the links on the BOOKS & BOOK REVIEWS web page.
  • EBSCOHOST - Search multiple databases (together or separately) to access full-text periodicals, newspapers and reference tools. Academic Search Premier and Business Search Premier index peer-reviewed scholarly journals in a variety of subject areas. Other databases focus on specific areas such as health and education.
  • LexisNexis ACADEMIC - Comprehensive research database providing full-text access to various databases, including current news, business information, Hoover’s company records, company directories, federal and state laws, legal cases, medical and references.
  • CAMPUS RESEARCH - Comprehensive research database includes full-text information and access to both current and archived materials, including thousands of news databases and newswires as well as business, trade and professional journals and publications; superior law-related resources.
  • LITERATURE RESOURCE CENTER - Access biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of more than 120,000 authors from every age and literary discipline.
  • JSTOR - Arts & Sciences I, II & III Collections include the complete back runs of 394 core journals in many disciplines, including economics, history, political science, and sociology, as well as in other key fields in the humanities and social sciences. Includes a selection of titles in the fields of archaeology, arts, classics, cultural studies, ecology, literature, mathematics, and statistics.
  • MLA--Modern Language Association - International in scope, it is the premiere tool for researchers in the humanities, particularly in literature, language, and linguistics, providing more than 1.6 million bibliographic citations from 1963 to the present.
  • NEW YORK TIMES HISTORICAL - Indexing, including fulltext and images from 1851 through 2005.  Great place to look for theatrical reviews.
  • Project MUSE - Project MUSE - Basic College Collection is a unique collaboration providing full-text, user-friendly online access to 116 humanities, arts, and social sciences journals.
  • ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA ONLINE - More than 72,000 encyclopedia articles on all subjects.
  • ARTstor - Digital library with over 400,000 images covering art, architecture and archeology with descriptive information as well as software tools to support research uses. Initial acquisition and first year access provided by a gift from Leroy and Mary Joyce [Baker] Pickett, class of 1962.

  • Encyclopedia of World Drama (809.2 M147) - An illustrated 4-vol. set with articles arranged alphabetically by playwright.
  • Cambridge Guide to World Theatre (792 C177) - Brief articles about theatre practices worldwide. A revised edition was published as Cambridge Guide to the Theatre (792.03 B21c).
  • Oxford encyclopedia of theatre & performance (792.03 O984) - A 2-vol. companion encyclopedia with brief articles.
  • Oxford companion to American theatre (792.0973 B72o 2004) - A companion encyclopedia with brief articles about the American theater.

  • Play Index (808.82 W51p) - Index to individual plays in published collections.
  • New York Theatre Critics Reviews, 1986-1996 (792.15 N5322) - A multi-volume set of reviews of plays performed in the New York local and regional area. Shelved behind circulation on permanent reserve. Each annual volume has its own index, and a Comprehensive Index to NY Theatre Critics' Reviews is available online.
  • An Index to Literature in the New Yorker (051 J68i) - Reviews of books, plays, cinema, and television from the New Yorker magazine from 1925-1973.
  • American Drama Criticism (792.0973 P17a) - An older bound set indexing criticism of American plays prior to 1975.
  • European Drama Criticism (809.2 P17e) - Like the foregoing source, but for European drama (excluding Shakespeare).
  • Grey House Performing Arts Directory (791 G843 2002) - Dance, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Theatre, Series & Festivals, Artist Management, Facilities, Media Sources.
  • Theatrical Design in the 20th Century (792.025 T3743) - An index to photographs of stage settings reproduced in books and magazines.

  • New Biographical Dictionary of Film (791.43 T48n) - Brief entries on actors, directors and producers.
  • International Encyclopedia of Film (791.4 I61) - Brief informative articles.
  • Motion Picture Guide (791.4 M918) - An older 10-vol. set, lists plots and personnel. On Permanent Reserve.
  • The Complete Index to Literary Sources in Film (791.43 G57c) - The volume, which is subdivided into author, film, and literary source indexes, covers most literary forms, including stories, novels/novellas, verse, and plays, as well as nonfiction works.
  • Guide to Critical Reviews: The Screenplay (809.2 S16g) - An older bound index to reviews of films from 1927-1980.

  • LOC--NATIONAL AUDIO-VISUAL CONSERVATION CENTER - A state-of-the-art facility where the Library of Congress acquires, preserves and provides access to the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of films, television programs, radio broadcasts, and sound recordings.  
  • PERFORMING ARTS ENCYCLOPEDIA - Serves as a guide to the collections and resources at the Library of Congress that pertain to music, theater, and dance.
  • VIRTUAL LIBRARY OF THEATRE AND DRAMA - Gateway site to categories related to theater, including international and multicultural information.
  • WGBH OPEN VAULT - Online access to unique and historically important content produced by public television station WGBH for individual and classroom learning. The ever-expanding site contains video excerpts, searchable transcripts, a select number of complete interviews for purchase, and resource management tools.
