Information for New Students at Simpson
Recommendations for students who would like to bring their own computer.
Simpson College's campus-wide computer network connects all classrooms, labs, offices and student residences to shared file servers and to the Internet at 100 megabytes. Many students bring their own computers to campus and have continual access to e-mail, the Web and much more.
Configuring your computer for Simpson's network
For information on how to connect to Simpson's network, please visit our network access site. Two important things to remember. Uninstall any anti-virus software your system currently contains and install Symantec Norton Antivirus from a Simpson Student Resource CD. Student Resource CD's can and should be shared. Information Services does have extra Student Resource CD's if you don't have one or the ability to borrow one.
Computer lab information
There are 35 computer labs on campus with over 300 computers. Students can use standard Office Suite applications or special, discipline-specific software.
Technology workshops
If you are a new first-year student or transfer student, please attend your assigned workshop. In addition to introducing new students to the available technology on campus, each student will receive their e-mail password and StormFront user name at this workshop.
StormFront
StormFront is a program that allows students to check their grades, course offerings and class schedules online. StormFront also allows students to check their academic progress.
WebMail
WebMail allows students to check their Simpson e-mail from any computer that has a web browser and is connected to the Internet. Visit our frequently asked questions page for more information.
Students will need to bring their own phone from home, and voicemail is provided so you do not need to bring an answering machine. Students keep the same phone number all four years. At least two phone lines are available in each housing unit, but in some cases there may be additional lines provided, given the number of occupants in the housing unit. Read instructions on how to access voicemail, telephone service forms and telephone relocation forms.
Cable TV
Basic cable is provided to each room in the residence halls. Students will need to bring their own coaxial patch cable to connect. Be sure you know how to make your TV cable-ready. For an additional fee, premium channels are available through Mediacom; call 515-246-1555 to order. Click here to view all channels available. Be sure to give Mediacom your physical street address (example: 703 North E Street instead of ATO Fraternity).
