Iowa History Center

Welcome

BillFriedricksFrom the Director:

Welcome to the Iowa History Center at Simpson College (IHC). We were founded in 2006 on the premise that history starts at the local level, and  not enough was being done to preserve, promote, or present Iowa history in a meaningful way. Our aim is to encourage the study of this history and bring it to the public in an interesting and enlightening manner.

Bill Friedricks, Director

We recently received some wonderful news. The James W. Hubbell Jr. and Helen H. Hubbell Foundation announced a gift of $125,000 to support the IHC Speaker Series. The gift is especially significant because it comes from a family which has played an important role in Iowa history, dating back to F.M. Hubbell and his arrival in Des Moines in 1855.

With these funds, we will continue telling the story of Iowa's history and culture by bringing leading scholars, authors, and journalists, as well as artists, photographers, and plawrights, and their work to Simpson and central Iowa. We already have som exciting programs lined up for next year, including the Iowa premier of America's Darling, a new documentary currently in production about J.N. "Ding" Darling, the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Des Moines Register and renowned conservationist.

Actually, we had a small hand in the film's development; this past fall, Signe Mayland, one of our IHC interns, worked on the project. Details about the premiere will follow soon. For more information on the film, see http://www.marvoentertainmentgroup.com
