Announcements

Alison Swanson introduced Meghan Von Behren who began her employment as an Admission Counselor earlier this month and is already out on the road talking to prospective students.

Marilyn Johnson and Julie Hill introduced us to the scheduler web site, which can be found at:  http://rain/spiisuite

This will be a helpful site if you 1) have a meeting but cannot remember the location, 2) cannot remember if you called the Conference to schedule a room for an up-coming meeting or 3) simply want to see what is scheduled for the day.

Program

The October program was presented by Kay Neumann-Thomas Vice President of Programs, Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation, Marilyn Johnson, Director of Conferences, Marilyn Mueller, Professor of Management and Tom Schmidt, Associate Professor of Management. Their program was entitled “Simpson College and Business Horizons – A Great Partnership"

Simpson and the Business Horizons has partnered together over the last four years to provide High School students from across the state a week-long summer program to  learn about the world of business.  Kay Neumann-Thomas showed a video that detailed some of the events that happen during the week.  The cost to attend the program is $250.00.  The balance of expenses is covered by scholarships provided by Iowa businesses.  Last year 93 students form 34 counties participated in the program.  A goal of 120 has been set for the 2010 Business Horizons week.  If you know of a High School student that might be interested you can nominate them at: http://www.businesshorizonsiowa.com .

Marilyn Mueller and Tom Schmidt began their portion of the program by thanking all the departments and individuals involved in making the Business Horizons week a success these past four years.  They talked about the wonderful exposure the College gets from the partnership and the type of students that the program has attracted.

Students can earn 2 hours of college credit if at the conclusion of the week they write a college level paper on their experience.

The next Employee Council is scheduled for November 18 at 8:00 a.m., in Camp Lounge.  Our speaker will be Sally Cooper Smith.  Her presentation is entitled: "Introducing Simpson College, The Brand"

September 9, 2009

Announcements

Flu Shots are scheduled for Oct. 6, 2009; more information will be coming soon.

Bob Lane introduced Sara Roeser who began her employment at Simpson last week.

Program

The September program was presented by President Byrd. His program was entitled “The Year Ahead...New Opportunities, Familiar Challenges"

President Byrd began with a review of a presentation he gave us in the spring of last year, explaining how a budget model was created to prepare the College for the challenges ahead.  He then went on to talk about the response (or "lemonade") that is being made, including several new initiatives implemented by the Admissions Office and the results of those initiatives in attracting students to Simpson.  President Byrd announced several of his own priorities for the coming year. One is to help build revenue by traveling to visit alumni and friends of the College.

As President Byrd will be gone from campus more frequently to pursue this priority, several cabinet members are accepting new responsibilities. Steve Griffith was named Sr. Vice President and Academic Dean, and Jim Thorius was named Vice President for Planning and Student Development. The President encouraged us to remember there will be “Curves, Potholes, and Construction Zones” ahead, along with “Smooth Pavement”, but we have a “GPS” system and a “Great Vehicle” to get there.

The next Employee Council is scheduled for October 28 at 8:00 a.m., in Camp Lounge.

April 15, 2009

Announcements

We had no announcements or introductions.

Program

The April program was our annual harassment program which was presented by Drew Bracken of the Ahlers & Cooney law firm.

Drew began by explaining that he thinks the problems of harassment occurs many times because we all have different sensibilities about things, such as telling appropriate jokes and determining when it reaches a unwelcome level.  He used the example of the music professor at the University of Iowa who committed suicide as a result of a sexual harassment claim. That the claim of sexual harassment had originated with the professor sending inappropriate jokes.  Drew also talked about the Indianola official who resigned as a result of his use of the e-mail becoming public.  The rule of thumb we all should use is to determine if we would like to see the e-mails we send published in our local newspaper.

The next Employee Council is scheduled for May 20 at 8:00 a.m., in Camp Lounge.  Renee Dalrymple is our speaker.  She will be sharing ideas about wellness in these stressful times.

President Byrd continued his discussion on how the College plans to proceed and respond to the current economic climate.

The President began with a review of the e-mail message he sent to the campus community Friday, January 30, which included updates from the recent Board meeting and several very positive things that are happening on campus.

He reiterated that the challenges we face in this uncertain economic time could last for several years.  He also stressed that the budget model is just a model; it is an estimation of what could happen and how we might reply to these economic demands.

Program

President Byrd presented a program on how the College plans to proceed and respond to the current economic climate.

The President began his discussion by reviewing the headlines of recent articles, detailing what other institutions are doing to respond to the economic times.  He then listed the challenges we will be facing not only next year, but quite possibly for the next several years.  He explained the model he and the cabinet have been working on for the next fiscal year.  He also detailed several initiatives that will be enacted. Several positive things in these uncertain times are: the College has low debt; we have a healthy EWG program; and the current applications and deposits for fall enrollment are on pace with other successful recruiting years. We as a College will meet the challenge.

November 2008

Announcements

We welcomed two new people to the Simpson Community - Rhonda Grant, Student Support Services Administrative Assistant and Aaron Page, Administrative Assistance for College Advancement.

President Byrd announced December 24 is being added as an extra day to the December and New Year's holiday break.

President Byrd also addressed the financial situation our nation is currently facing. He listed five areas it is or has the potential of affecting us:  enrollment, giving, the endowment, the annual income the college uses from the endowment and operating cost.  He assured the group that 30 years of balanced budgets and limited borrowing has placed Simpson in a strong financial situation and that this is a moment of opportunity, not one for inactivity.  Four groups have been developed to focus on enrollment, costs, communication and giving that will be proactive; determining if there are areas where calculated risk can and should be taken.  He stressed the need to stay positive, and that he believes the college will come out of the situation a stronger and better positioned institution in the end.

Program

Our speaker was Dr. Harry Brod, Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of Northern Iowa.  Dr. Brod began his discussion recounting how the stories from White Men Challenging Racism: 35 Personal Stories were developed. Many of the men were surprised to learn there were other white males working in the area of racism.  He shared one quote, "...I have a vision that when we arrive at the Pearly Gates, we're going to find that God is everything that we're not.  If God made us all, then he is all of us.  At my moment of death, the God who comes to judge me will be young, gay, Jewish, African American and she is going to say, 'How the hell did you treat me?' "

Dr. Brod spoke of being at a presentation given by Parker Palmer several years ago, where Parker stated that when he heard a group describe themselves as being homogeneous, he replied that he had not encountered a group that was truly homogeneous as there were always "hidden" diversities.  Dr. Brod said he believes this is the place people need to start; to learn the hidden diversities and getting to know others in your own community better, and to accept these diversities.

The next Employee Council meeting is scheduled for January 21, 2009 beginning at 8:00 a.m. in Camp Lounge.

May 2008

Announcements

Jim Hayes introduced Bobby Nalean as the new Service Leadership and Service Coordinator.

Program

Susan Kerr was our speaker. Susan is a Consumer Protection Investigator with the Iowa Attorney General's Office.  She presentes a program entitled "Identity Theft -  Don't Let it Happen to You!"

Susan had many great ways to reduce our risk of identity theft.  She told us that the key to knowing who, when and where to share our social security numbers is to think about our SSN as the keys to unlock your financial houses.  If you are in a situation where you would not share the keys to your home, do not share your SSN.

Other ideas included:

  • Registering and monitoring your credit reports annually.  There are three services you can register with.
  • Adding cell and work telephone numbers to Do Not Call lists.  There is a $1.00 cost for each number, but the number will remain on the do not call list for  five years.
  • Look at your Voter Registration card to see if your social security number is your identification number.  Susan suggested calling the Auditor and asking for a new card with a non-SSN identification number.
