Employee Council Minutes

September 2008

Announcements

We welcomed two new people to the Simpson Community - Stacy Lindsley, Faculty Support in the Theatre Department and Cindy Nisley, Director of Foundation and Government Support.

President Byrd announced that he recently signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, which pledges the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions at colleges and universities.  If anyone would like to help with this initiative, please contact the President's office to join the sustainability committee.

Program

Our first speaker was Tyler Erwin, Assistant Men's Basketball Coach and Athletic Liaison.  Tyler shared a presentation about the CHAMPS program, which was introduced at Simpson in 2006.  There are five components to CHAMPS: a mentoring program, academic tutoring, personal development, career development and community service.

April Goers, Director of Student Support Services (SSS) was our second speaker.  This is the fourth year for the program, so they have come full circle with the first group of participants.  Highlights from the last year include: 280 participants; a successful Supplemental Instruction program, which will be offered to the entire campus this year; $56,000 in grant aid to participants to purchases text books; creation of an SSS theme house; and annually, one of the largest Camps Day teams.

The next Employee Council meeting is scheduled for October 15, 2008 beginning at 8:00 a.m. in Camp Lounge.

May 2008

Announcements

Jim Hayes introduced Bobby Nalean as the new Service Leadership and Service Coordinator.

Program

Susan Kerr was our speaker. Susan is a Consumer Protection Investigator with the Iowa Attorney General's Office.  She presentes a program entitled "Identity Theft -  Don't Let it Happen to You!"

Susan had many great ways to reduce our risk of identity theft.  She told us that the key to knowing who, when and where to share our social security numbers is to think about our SSN as the keys to unlock your financial houses.  If you are in a situation where you would not share the keys to your home, do not share your SSN.

Other ideas included:

  • Registering and monitoring your credit reports annually.  There are three services you can register with.
  • Adding cell and work telephone numbers to Do Not Call lists.  There is a $1.00 cost for each number, but the number will remain on the do not call list for  five years.
  • Look at your Voter Registration card to see if your social security number is your identification number.  Susan suggested calling the Auditor and asking for a new card with a non-SSN identification number.
