Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry
Simpson College, a private, nationally recognized regional college grounded in the liberal arts tradition and affiliated with the United Methodist Church invites nominations and applications for the position of r a tenure track position in organic chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor starting in September 2012. A PhD in Organic Chemistry or closely related area is expected.
The candidate will be expected to teach the organic chemistry sequence with labs and discussion sections, a one-semester course in Biochemistry, direct students in research, and provide opportunities for students to present their research at conferences. In addition candidates are expected to advise students, to serve the department by actively recruiting students to the college and majors to the department, work with department members on curriculum development, participate in the life of the faculty by serving on committees and developing curriculum, and to work with faculty across the campus on all college issues. The candidate will be expected to develop a modest student research program in an environment of limited resources.
The standard teaching load is six courses per year (two labs = one course). Normally the candidate will be assigned to teach a year-long two semester organic course with labs each year, a one-semester biochemistry course, along with an advanced course every other year. Other course assignments may occasionally include a course in our three-week May Term, a Simpson Colloquium course for freshmen, or (voluntarily) a travel abroad semester.
Our program offers majors in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Forensic Science with about 30-40 majors total.
