Huntington and the Creation of Southern California, which won the Donald H. Pflueger Award for the best book in southern California history.

After coming to Simpson 1988, Friedricks became interested in Iowa history and has written extensively in the field. This includes three books: Covering Iowa: The History of the Des Moines Register and Tribune Company, 1849-1985 (2000); In for the Long Haul: The Life of John Ruan (2003); and Investing in Iowa: The Life and Times of F. M. Hubbell (2007). He has also published a number of articles and book reviews and served as guest editor for The Annals of Iowa 67 (Spring/Summer 2008). In the fall of 2008, Friedricks became the inaugural recipient of the Iowa History Prize, a biennial award given by Humanities Iowa.
