Writing Skills

Although you have probably done quite a bit of writing in high school, previous college classes, or even your job, it is sometimes difficult for college students to handle the different types of writing required by college professors. Being asked to write an in-depth research paper, a lab report, or even a journal entry can seem confusing if you don't understand what these different types of writing entail. It is also helpful to have a good idea of what constitutes strong writing overall at the college level.  This short handbook is an introduction to the types of writing you will likely be asked to do in college, and also a review of some of the basic elements of good writing. In addition, we have included some of the most common writing problems that college students have in order to help you address any weaknesses in your own writing.

If you have any questions or concerns about your writing in general, or if you would like assistance with a specific writing assignment you are working on, please contact the Hawley Academic Resource Center at 961-1524. At Hawley we provide free writing assistance for students working on papers and free individual consultations to assist students with their writing.
