WCII - Evaluation Procedures
Because Writing Competency is considered a cross-curricular skill, it is
evaluated by a pool of faculty members chosen from every division on campus.
Each portfolio is initially assigned to one evaluator, who sees the entire
portfolio with its original comments and revisions (if any). If the first evaluator thinks the portfolio shows adequate writing skills, it passes without further reading. If the first evaluator thinks the portfolio is poor or questionable, it is read by another evaluator, and they reach a joint decision.
"Pass" portfolios
A. If your portfolio passes, you will receive written notification, with copies sent to your advisor and the Registrar's office. Your transcript will indicate that you passed Writing Competency II.
B. You should then stop by the Hawley Academic Resource Center to pick up your papers. Because of space limitations, papers which aren't picked up will eventually be discarded.
"Non-pass" portfolios
A. If your portfolio does not pass, you will receive written notification, with a copy sent to your advisor. The "non-pass" evaluation never appears in your permanent records.
B. To revise the portfolio, start by visiting the Hawley Academic Resource Center, or calling 961-1524. Hawley will have the portfolio plus comments and suggested revisions from both evaluators. Because these suggestions are used as evaluation criteria by the person/people who read your revision, you must read and follow them. In most cases, revisions involve only 1-2 of the original papers--and often for specific issues.
C. Your revised portfolio is due no later than 45 days into the next semester, though early submissions are preferred.
D. Once you have made the revisions, resubmit the portfolio to the Hawley Academic Resource Center, and the evaluation process will be repeated. Again, you will be notified in writing about your results.
