MOVE IN DAY

Move-In Day is the start of your Simpson Experience. Amid the frenzy of moving into your housing assignment, taking in the initial orientation activities, and meeting new friends, take a deep breath and enjoy the fact that you are now a college student. If you have any questions, there is lots of help – ask your Community Advisor or your Destination Leader – just to name a few. You are off to a great start!

Move Into Your New Home!
Residence Hall and Orientation Check In

Students living on campus check in at their assigned residence hall and receive their orientation packet. You will receive lots of help moving in from our Greek Life students and can use that extra time to get acquainted with your roommate and other new students in your hall. Make sure to look over all the contents of your orientation packet thoroughly. It contains your mailbox combo, e-mail information, and orientation information.

Parent Orientation Camp Lounge, Brenton Student Center

After a long day of moving, it’s time for parents to take a break, relax and get to meet other parents as they explore the challenges, opportunities and joys of being a parent of a college student. The staff of the Counseling and Career Services Office will facilitate a parents’ panel and a college student panel as they help parents ask and answer all their questions.

Parents of new student-athletes get an opportunity to learn more about their new student-athletes' upcoming college experiences.

Commuter student orientation check-in Brenton Student Center

Although commuter students have a little further to travel, you are also a part of the Simpson community. Stop by the Office of Student Development to get your orientation information and join the fun.

3-4:00 p.m.
Welcome Service for new students and families Campus Quadrangle

Join representatives from all areas of Simpson College on the Campus Quadrangle as we officially welcome you to our college community. The service culminates as all first-year students pass through the College Gates (a gift from the class of 1912) and start their Simpson Experience.

4-4:30 p.m.
Time to say goodbye

It’s time to go! With a few last words of advice, students head off to their first orientation event and parents head home – both embarking on a new journey.

4:30-5:00 p.m.
Meet Your Fellow First-Years Residence Hall floor

After bidding your parents farewell, it’s time to gather around your Community Advisor on your residence hall floor and get to know your next door neighbor. (Commuter students will be assigned a residence hall floor group so they can also have some fellow travelers for the rest of the evening)

5-6:00 p.m.
First-Year Student Picnic Between Kresge/Barker Halls; north of Pfeiffer

The Simpson College Student Government Association (SGA) will be cooking up a storm outside Pfeiffer Dining Hall. Grab some dinner, hang out with your new classmates, and meet some wonderful student leaders (Rain site: Great Hall)

6:30-8:00 p.m.
Risque’ Business Pote Theatre

Students of Theatre Simpson will present a humorous and touching theatrical performance which identifies and addresses some of the realities, joys and challenges of college life. Come with your residence hall floormates and see what your peers have to say.

It’s time to head back to your residence hall floor and discuss Risque’ Business with your Community Advisor as well as the joys of living on campus.

New student “Stormy Nights” kick-off activities

What better way to spend the first night on campus than with “Stormy Nights.” “Stormy Nights” is the name of the regular weekend activities program offered by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) throughout the academic year. Activities for tonight include:

First-Year Student Community Service Project
Depart from Brenton Student Center

The first-year service project is an opportunity to recognize the many new communities to which you belong: the friends you make while doing a worthwhile project, your LAS and the Simpson community which serves Indianola and metropolitan Des Moines in many ways. Do not wait a single moment to improve your new communities! The service you provide for these communities today may require you to do such activities as painting and yard work so dress appropriately.

Once you return from the community service project, join your LAS group for a picnic lunch on the plaza just to the west of Dunn Library. Go to the designated picnic area then to your LAS classroom.

PITSTOPS

Choir auditions, Duncan Hall,ARMC

Choir is open to any Simpson student who would like to participate. You do not need to bring any formal audition material. New music majors in voice and non-majors with activity or participation awards in music must audition. The choir performs works, both sacred and secular, from the Renaissance to the 20th Century.

First Year Student Talent Show Registraton, ARMC lobby

The first-year talent show is for any first-year student who wants to show off their performing talent whether that be musical, dramatic, a comedy routine, dancing, etc. A piano accompanist will be available. The First-Year Talent Show will take place on Monday, September 1, at 7pm in Great Hall.

If you missed summer orientation or need a refresher course, the Information Services staff is offering another information technology session to introduce you to Simpson e-mail and other technology programs and services offered at Simpson.

Math competency placement test

Math competency placement is not required for all students. Students who need to take this test will be contacted in advance about the test and testing location.

2-3:00 p.m.
Madrigal Auditions,Lekberg Hall, ARMC

The Madrigal is a select ensemble (20 voices) which is open to any interested Simpson student. They specialize in repertoire from the European Renaissance.

All non-fall sport athletes are required to attend this meeting. If you have a conflict, please contact the athletic office.

Band is open to any interested Simpson student who plays an instrument. All new instrumental music majors and non-majors with activity or participation awards in an instrument must participate. The band performs a wide variety of standard and contemporary works for wind ensemble.

Student work study employment at Simpson College is a great opportunity to get involved with the workings of your college. It offers excellent experience and a schedule that fits your needs. Report to your work study assignment to get acquainted with the expectations of your new position.

First-Year Chorus Rehearsal, Lekberg Hall, ARMC

The First-Year Chorus is open to any new student interested in a recreational choral experience. You need not be interested in joining one of the regular choral ensembles. The First-Year Chorus will rehearse the first week of the fall semester and will perform at the First-Year Talent Show and for a fall First-Year event.

Not quite sure what to get involved in? This is THE place to be if you want to find a club or organization to join on campus. Simpson College has approximately 80 student organizations, many of which will be here. There will also be information and resources available about Simpson and the surrounding community.
