Phil 250 LA: Applied Ethics (CS4A)
TTH 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. TH 1:00 – 1:50 p.m.
The application of various ethical theories to contemporary moral problems in our society. Sample topics include: moral dilemmas in the business world, capital punishment, environmental ethics, and animal rights. Students will be asked to critically examine and evaluate specific cases.
Cornerstone 4A. Three hours.
This course is of particular interest to students who:
- Are interested in issues of ethics and how one should lead an ethical life
- Are interested in interrogating what constitutes fair and just social policy
- Enjoy being challenged – academically and personally
- Enjoy classes that are discussion-based
Meet Your Professor
Allison Wolf, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Philosophy
Allison B. Wolf is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Simpson College. Dr. Wolf earned her B.A. from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, where she majored in Philosophy. From there, she earned her Masters and Ph.D. in philosophy from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, where she specialized in Applied Ethics, especially medical ethics and feminist ethics/philosophy. Dr. Wolf's research areas include feminist ethics, medical ethics and the ethics and globalization and development, especially in Costa Rica, as well as research in Latino and Latin American studies.
Dr. Wolf is very interested in helping students challenge themselves and broaden their personal and professional horizons through the study and application of philosophy and ethics, in particular. She does this through her teaching (both on campus, on domestic study experiences in California and internationally in Costa Rica when possible), advising, community service and campus service projects. Dr. Wolf welcomes the opportunity to work with students of all backgrounds and interests who like to learn, be challenged and explore themselves and their world.

Michael Wilson
Michael La Ronn Wilson was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and is a proud St. Louisan. He is an English and Spanish major and is involved with the Multicultural Student Alliance on campus. He is deeply active in campus activities and is famous for his dry, quirky humor.
When he is not in class, Michael writes music, his favorite pastime since the age of five. He also enjoys listening to music, and there are few types of music which he is not familiar with. He loves to spend time with the people he loves, and considers learning a lifelong priority. He also enjoys travel, and has been to Costa Rica and Nicaragua. He plans on traveling to Thailand in January.
