Music 101 LA: Survey of Music Literature

Mus 101 LAS: Survey of Music Literature is required of all students intending to major in music. It is open to freshmen who are undecided about a music major or who would like to minor in music.
Survey is designed to introduce students to the critical listening skills necessary to appreciate serious art music and to learn the characteristics of the various historical periods of musical composition. The material is presented in a historical, social and artistic context to integrate music with development of Western culture. Students will also be introduced to non-Western music practices.

This course is of particular interest to students:
- Wishing to enhance their understanding and appreciation of music.
- Pursuing a major or minor in music.
- Intent on exploring the relationship between music and culture.
- Wishing to complete Cornerstone 5.
Meet Your Professor
Maria DiPalma, D.M.
Professor of Music
Maria DiPalma is Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department as well as the mezzo-soprano on the voice faculty of Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa. Her academic duties include teaching applied voice and the seminar in vocal literature as well as team teaching the department’s Liberal Arts Seminar for Freshmen, Survey of Music History. She holds a D.M.A. in Vocal Performance from Indiana University, attended the Curtis Institute of Music and has B.M. and M.M. degrees in voice and opera from The Philadelphia Musical Academy.
She has performed various roles with the Des Moines Metro Opera including the pre-world premiere of Seymor Barab's La Pizza con Funghi as well as the title roles in The Ballad of Baby Doe, The Coronation of Poppea and Rosalinda in Strauss' Die Fledermaus as a faculty artist at Simpson.
Dr. DiPalma is a frequent recitalist throughout Iowa and in Florence, Italy. Most recently she presented a program in the Salla Grande at Santa Croce in Florence. Other recital appearances in addition to those at Simpson include performances at Johns Hopkins University, The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, and throughout Iowa as an Iowa Arts Council Touring Grant recipient and appearances with local orchestras as an oratorio soloist.
Dr. DiPalma has also served as an adjudicator for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in Kansas City, Milwaukee and Minneapolis as well as for the Iowa chapters of the NATS and IMTA competitions. She is also the editor of Anthology of Spanish Song published by Hal Leonard.
Meet Your Professor
Michael Patterson, Ph.D.
Professor of Music
Dr. Patterson is a graduate of Simpson College in Piano Performance and in Music Education. He later received his Masters Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Iowa. He holds his Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma.
Dr. Patterson is a Professor of Music and teaches courses in Elementary Music Methods, Piano, Sight-Singing and Ear Training, Chamber Music Literature, Symphonic Literature, Piano Literature, Piano Pedagogy, Composition, Survey of Music Literature and supervises student teachers.
Dr. Patterson founded and administrates the Simpson College Music Education Workshop Series, which hosts nationally recognized clinicians twice each year.
During the summer, Dr. Patterson has been an instructor in the Simpson Music Department’s Orpheus Festival for High School Students for the past twenty-four years, has taught in Simpson’s Elderhostel for nineteen years, and has worked for the Des Moines Metro Opera as Assistant to the Executive Director for thirty-three years.

Aliese Hoesel
Hey everyone! My name is Aliese Hoesel and I'm from Fort Dodge, Iowa. This year I am a Sophomore, majoring in Music Education with an English endorsement.
I'm so excited to help all of you with whatever it is that you need and to get the year started! I'm involved in the Simpson College Chorale, Mu Phi Epsilon, Alpha Lambda Delta, French Club, and Intramurals to name a few.
I like to spend my free time reading, watching movies, hanging out with my friends, hiking, biking, Salsa dancing, and volunteering at the Kiya Koda Animal Rescue Shelter by walking dogs.
