Eng 101 LA: Composition and Rhetoric I: Writing as a Form of Discovery.
MTWTH 1:00 – 1:50 p.m.
This introductory writing course is designed to help students explore the writing process while enhancing strategies and skills that will help them raise their level of writing to an accepted academic standard. Genres of writing will include autobiographical narration and description, observation, reflection and interpretation.
Three hours.
Points to consider:
- This course places an emphasis on writing as a process allowing students to obtain feedback and improve on their original work.
- Students will be encouraged to think critically and specifically.
- Classes will be interactive with both creative and analytical activities.
- Students who enjoy writing will be challenged to improve their abilities while writing with a specific purpose or parameters.
- Students who do not enjoy writing will find the support necessary to help them build skills that can enhance their performance in other courses.
Meet Your Professor
Davee Matlock
Assistant Professor of English
Davee Matlock, a visiting Assistant Professor of English, has taught at Simpson since 2003. Besides Composition and Rhetoric, she teaches classes such as Heritage of Western Literature, Western Traditions and Language
and Communication.
Professor Matlock believes that no matter the career path we choose, our competence and intelligence are often judged by how we express ourselves.
In her English 101 class, she will help students to express themselves as critical thinkers capable of any career path. In addition, she will encourage students to explore writing processes that work for them.
Reading and writing assignments will include autobiographical narrative
and description, observation, reflection and interpretation. Through these
genres, Professor Matlock will help students gain the skills and confidence to express their knowledge and opinions in a clear, concise and academic format.
Davee lives in Indianola with her husband and daughter. She enjoys traveling, trying new foods and activities, and spending time outdoors.

Miranda Pham
Miranda Pham is a junior majoring in Corporate Communications with a minor in Marketing at Simpson College. She is involved in PRSSA and is an Undergraduate for Media Services. She currently is employed at Best Buy as a Customer Assistant and a Computer Specialist.
She interns at Mediacom in the summers in the Communications and Public Relations department. Originally from Des Moines, Iowa she graduated from Lincoln High School with honors. In her spare time she enjoys being active by playing tennis, canoeing, kayaking and watching movies.
