Meet Your Professor
Amy Doling, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Biology
Biography: I grew up in upstate NY with my parents and younger sister. My favorite high school class was chemistry. In fact, I went to high school thinking that I would become a chemistry major. I was fascinated with science in general and spent a lot of time boring my family with practical chemistry information including why we need to use pressure cookers at high altitudes, and why ice skates allow us to glide over the ice. I am not sure that these were topics the rest of my family wanted to be discussing at the dinner table, but they usually indulged me!! I think it was clear even in high school that I was meant to be a teacher.
After high school I went to college in Atlanta, GA and during my freshman year I decided to major in biology. I also took a work-study job in a microbiology lab and was soon promoted from washing dishes to doing experiments on the bench. I spent 4 years studying Streptococcus pyogenes which is the causative agent of strep throat. I then decided to pursue a PhD in microbiology and moved to Boston, MA to do so. In graduate school I studied anthrax toxin as well as Shigella flexneri (which causes dysentery). My most embarrassing moment in graduate school was when I infected myself with Shigella and had to go to the emergency room. I finished my graduate studies in 2002 and joined the faculty at Simpson College that year.
I teach Microbiology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Biochemistry Seminar, Biochemistry Lab, Introductory Biology, Human Biology, and an AIDS course. I love living in the Midwest-it is much more laid back than the east coast and I have learned a lot about corn and soybeans. I did have to re-learn how to drive when I arrived in Iowa since I had relied on public transportation for 10 years.
When I am not teaching, I like to read, watch movies, and work on my house I bought a few years ago. I am mildly obsessed with my 3 year old basset hound named Miles-you will get to meet him for sure if you take this class.
Meet Your Destination LeaderAmy Gookin
I was born and raised in Fairfield, IA, a town of about 10,000 in southeastern Iowa. I have two younger brothers, Michael and Alex, who are twins. They are almost 14, which makes me feel REALLY old, considering I remember the day they were born. I have a black lab, Java, whom I love dearly and miss terribly. Occasionally I have to call home just to talk to him and, yes, he barks wildly because he misses me just as much!
I will be a junior in the fall, majoring in biochemistry and minoring in psychology, aspiring to be a doctor. (We will see how long THAT lasts!) Here at Simpson I have been involved in SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise), intramurals and mentoring.
I am extremely excited about being a Destination Leader and look forward to meeting all of my first-year advisees at summer orientation. It is my goal to help my first-year students transition into college life, become successful in their classes, create long-lasting friendships and have fun along the way.
I am an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield where I sang in the choir, performed in musicals and served on our youth council. I love staying active and playing sports. In high school I was in almost every extra-curricular activity offered including volleyball, swimming, basketball, golf, track and field, softball, band, choir, student council, drama, class officer, French Club etc. So most likely, I will be able to relate to you in some way. I am very outgoing, friendly and like to throw in the occasional sarcastic comment to lighten the mood.
I also love to travel and explore new places. I am traveling to Africa in May to study the AIDS crisis with about 20 other Simpson students, so I'm very excited about that. In my non-existent spare time I like to read, sleep, jam out to music and sing annoyingly loud, shop, watch movies and partake in extremely unhealthy food. Well, that's me in a nutshell, good ol' Amy Gookin. For the lucky few that will be taking the best LAS course ever, Biology 104 (Human Biology), I look forward to meeting you and having an awesome year!
