Simpson College Earth Corps
Are you passionate about the environment and excited about the idea of creating a more sustainable future? If so, the Simpson College Earth Corps program is a great opportunity for you to put your passion to work.
Students who participate in Earth Corps will receive up to $15,000 a year in exchange for 8-10 hours of work related to the program each week. Earth Corp grants are offered as an alternative to other Simpson College scholarships and grants.
As a member of Earth Corps, you'll be a part of a highly visible campus organization whose work has the potential to benefit generations to come. The Earth Corps program provides a unique opportunity for you to help shape the environmental policies at Simpson as the college increases its efforts to promote green initiatives on campus and across Central Iowa.
The Earth Corps program seeks to provide you and other student leaders with quality independent research and service experiences in a growing and increasingly relevant field. Earth Corps is a great complement to any of Simpson's excellent academic programs, and you can participate in Earth Corps regardless of your major.
What is Earth Corps?
Earth Corps is a self-directed group that will operate with support from Simpson's faculty and staff. In addition to providing leadership and operational support for the campus recycling program, Earth Corps will initiate research and outreach projects that will impact sustainability. Possible areas include but are not limited to:
- Transportation: Develop a campus-wide transportation plan to help reduce fossil fuel consumption and carbon production.
- Conservation: Study and recommend ways the campus can use less energy to help reduce the use of nonrenewable resources. Create awareness of and educate campus constituents on conservation.
- Education: Develop and deliver educational programs that raise awareness of the best practices for sustainability.
- Alternative Energy: Analyze alternative energy opportunities to determine their application for campus use.
- Food Production/Distribution: Consider local sources and create a college garden.
- Water Resources/Preservation: Test local water sources, determine water use levels on campus and in Indianola and make recommendations to preserve the water supply.
