Academic Support

Objective: As a result of LAS, students should be familiar with the services offered by the Hawley Academic Resource Center.

Implementation: Develop an assignment or project in conjunction with the staff of the Hawley Center. They have a number of modules available that can be modified to fit your needs. They will also work with you to tailor something for your class. In fulfillment of this project, students should set foot in the Hawley Center at least once.

Hopefully, students will subsequently seek out resources at Hawley if and when they need to. Going to Hawley during the first semester increases the chances that students will make use of Hawley’s resources in the future.

Supplementary Activities:

You may want to assign a paper for your students to complete relatively early in the semester so that students can make use of the writing assistants. This paper could even be the same paper that you use to help meet the Library Resources Goal Set and/or the Diversity and the Common Good Goal Set. Just be sure to watch the deadline for the paper so that your students are seeking out the writing assistants when the writing assistants are most available. It’s best to avoid encouraging your students to all seek out the writing assistants during the third, fourth, and fifth weeks of the semester. Similarly dead week and finals week should be avoided. These are particularly busy times for the writing assistants and thus are times that your students may have trouble making appointments.

Students should be encouraged to call to make an appointment to meet with a writing assistant at least three days ahead of time. They are welcome to call for an appointment up to three weeks in advance.

You could also encourage your students to form a study group for your class (or for a different, harder course) with the help of the staff of the Hawley Academic Resource Center. Study groups can arrange to meet at Hawley. Furthermore, the staff can provide such study groups with tips on how to study effectively in a group.
