Resources for People New to Teaching Online
Simpson has two flexible tools that allow faculty to teach online: Scholar sites and portal course sites.
- Learn about the differences between Scholar and the portal
- Learn to use Scholar
- To request a Scholar site, send an e-mail to scholar@simpson.edu
- To request a portal site, send an e-mail to portal@simpson.edu
How can you translate the things you and your students usually do in class to things students can do online? Here are a variety of possibilities for making lectures, class discussions, group projects, and more available online.
Other Online Options
If you chose not to use Scholar, consider using an alternative online method for students to access course materials, post messages, and receive assignments. Some faculty use a Portal course site, customized website, blog, or wiki for offering whole or portions of their course online.

Talk to Colleagues
Colleagues in your department or school may have experience teaching online or using some of the online tools discussed here. These colleagues might be particularly helpful to you if you need to adapt your classes during a flu outbreak. If you're one of these experienced colleagues, consider reaching out to newer faculty to see if they might need your assistance.
