GIFT Sessions
These 20 minute sessions provide a concrete idea you can easily implement in your own classes. The session location has changed to Cowles Classroom 2 and will be offered from 12:25-12:45 in that classroom. Faculty Development will pay for your lunch at the Express in Hopper - just go through and sign in there, get your lunch and bring it over to Cowles 2 and join us. Come at noon and sign in at the Hopper Express. We hope to see you!

Group Advising. Do you have many advisees and feel like you are giving out the same information over and over again? Come and learn how to facilitate a group advising session so that the students all get the information they need and you can become a more effective advisor. Nicci Whalen will facilitate this session.

Workshopping Papers: Workshopping papers is a way of providing students with peer feedback, but it isn’t the same thing as peer review. CoryAnne Harrigan will explain the difference and offer concrete tips for using this great idea.

Exam Autopsy. What can students do to improve their exam performance? The answer depends on why they answered items incorrectly. In this GIFT Session, Jackie Brittingham will share how she's uses an Exam Analysis Tool/Exam Autopsy to help students categorize their exam errors (poor notes, poor test-taking strategies, misunderstanding concepts, etc.)

Giving Feedback about Oral Presentations. When students give oral presentations, they should immediately receive feedback from the other students and from the instructor. Lisa Carponelli will share the structured method she's used to guide students in providing feedback to presenters during class.

Letters to Future Students. Come learn how Emily Skow gets students to reflect on what and how they've learned in a course by requiring them to write letters to students taking that course in the future. Emily also requires those future students to read the letters.

Designing Effective Information Literacy Assignments. Come hear Shane Cox and the rest of the information literacy faculty learning community share what they learned about best practices in designing effective information literacy assignments. A sample assignment and accompanying grading rubric will be shared.
