Epsilon Sigma Constitution

The constitution of Epsilon Sigma as amended in 1984 and 1990:

Article I

Name
The name of this organization shall be "Epsilon Sigma."

Article II

Purpose
The purpose of Epsilon Sigma shall be the recognition and promotion of high standards of scholarship.

Article III

Membership
Section 1.  Members of any senior class of Simpson College who at the close of their senior year will have completed sixty-four semester hours in Simpson College and have an accumulative Simpson grade point average of not less than 3.5 by the end of their first senior semester shall be eligible for nomination for membership. Only ten percent (10%) of the senior class members who meet this criteria shall be nominated and elected.

Section 2.  Up to five members of the junior class of Simpson who have a three point seven-five (3.75) grade point average and seventy-two hours at Simpson College by the end of the first semester of their junior year may be elected. In their senior year, these juniors become part of the ten percent (10%) of the seniors eligible for nomination and election.

Section 3.  From the list of those eligible, nominations and elections shall be made by a committee who are composed of all the Simpson College faculty members of Epsilon Sigma. This committee shall determine the number (up to ten percent) to be elected from the graduating class.

Section 4.  Fifteen years following graduation, and additional ten percent (10%) of each graduating class may be elected to membership in Epsilon Sigma. Alumni to be eligible must have earned a graduate degree or have distinguished themselves in a chosen field of service.

Section 5.  Faculty with a professorial rank (instructor, assistant professor, associate professor or professor) who have been full-time members of the faculty for three years are eligible for membership. Faculty members who are members of Phi Beta Kappa may become members immediately.

Article IV

Now Amended
Officers

Section 1.  The officers of the Epsilon Sigma shall be a President, a President-Elect, and a Secretary-Treasurer elected biennially, whose duties shall be such as usually pertain to their offices:  President-Elect is a one-year position for facilitating continuity of procedures and is to be filled the year after election of the other officers. Officers shall be elected from the faculty members of the society.

Section 2.  A nominating committee of three members of the society, appointed by the President annually, will present a slate of nominees for consideration at the annual meeting.

Article V

Meetings
Section 1.  The annual meeting for election of officer(s) and transaction of other business shall be held on or near Honors Convocation at a time and place set by the President.

Section 2.  A meeting may be called at any time by the President, or at the written request of six members.

Section 3.  Members present and voting shall constitute a quorum for business.

Article VI

Finance
Section 1.  The membership fee is $15.00. A member may have the option of purchasing an emblem at cost. If the member elected is already a member of Phi Beta Kappa, he/she may become a member of Epsilon Sigma of payment of $5.00.

Section 2.  There shall be no annual dues.

Section 3.  No person shall be installed until the membership fee shall have been paid.

Section 4.  Upon recommendation of the faculty members of Epsilon Sigma and ratification by the annual meeting, a balance in the treasury may be expended on some project for the promotion of scholarship.

Article VII

Emblem
Section 1.  Description:  The Epsilon Sigma emblem contains the gold letters E* on a red background.

Section 2.  Emblems shall be purchasable only through the Secretary-Treasurer of Epsilon Sigma.

Section 3.  Only members can wear the emblem.

Article VIII

Amendment
This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of those present at a regularly called meeting.
