NOTE TO STUDENTS: In some cases, the Iowa State Department of Education requirements change after a College Catalog has been published. It is essential that students work with the Education Department's Program and Advising Handbook in order to ensure compliance with current state regulations.
Students seeking licensure as a secondary teacher must complete all of the following requirements in addition to the college graduation requirements:
- Follow Levels of Admission to Simpson College Teacher Education Program
- Complete Competencies set up by Education Department
- A major and approved endorsement program (see Program/Advising Handbook)
- Professional Education Core
- Student Teaching
- Additional Licensure Requirements: Physical Science, Biological Science and Algebra
- Enroll in the Secondary Education Minor

(includes all of the Professional Education Core)

- Educ 114 Foundations of Education (3)
- Educ 165 Human Growth and Development (3)
- Educ 229/509* The Learning Process - Music majors exempt (3)
- Educ 241B Field Experience - Required for Art, Music, PE only(3)
- Educ 312/512 Education & Collaboration for Students with Special Needs (3)
- Educ 316/516 Secondary Education and Practicum* (Not required for Music and P.E. students)
- Educ 321/521 Human Relations in Teaching (3)
Note: Music and P.E. Majors complete their "methods" courses within their own departments. They must take separate methods courses aimed at the elementary level and the secondary level to be able to be recommended for licensure.

Education 316/516 must be taken before or concurrently with a 340/540 class. Students are encouraged to take Education 316/516 and the 340/540 classes during separate semesters, but if necessary, they may be taken concurrently. Students may not take more than one 340/540 course per semester.

Student Teaching (for licensure):
Required Courses:
- Educ 388/588 Student Teaching* (14 to 18)
- Educ 389/589 Student Teaching Seminar (1)
Students may combine two or more student teaching assignments, but all student teachers must student teach full-time for a minimum of 14 weeks. One week equates to one semester hour. Students should contact an Education Department advisor for specific student teaching requirements for each endorsement program. Students seeking two or more divergent endorsements should expect to student teach longer than 14 weeks. The State of Iowa requires that all student teaching placements are full-time (regular teacher hours) and full-semester. Students are encouraged to limit their work schedules and not take classes or participate in extra-curricular activities during the student teaching semester.
