Here is what our students are saying about our faculty
Read the comments made in February 2008 by evening and weekend students as they nominated faculty for the Alpha Sigma Lambda Excellence in Adult Education award.
Major change in curriculum under consideration
These proposals are guided by four principles:
Principle #1: Simpson students need to be more engaged in and responsible for their learning than is currently the case. This can be accomplished in many ways. One way to engage students is experiential learning. The use of experiential teaching methods (service-learning, research, internships, etc.) is growing rapidly at Simpson College and other good colleges.
Principle #2: The academic calendar, course credit system, and daily schedule should support the academic objectives and overall mission of Simpson College.
Principle #3: The academic structure at Simpson College should be informed by the practices at other high-quality institutions of its type.
Principle #4: Any changes in academic structure need to support the quality and rigor of the traditional undergraduate and adult learning programs.
Key directions the faculty is considering:
1) Switch to a unit system (a course is one unit, equivalent to 4 credits) and reduce the number of courses required for graduation to 34 from the current 42.
2) Align the curriculum so that a major would be 10-12 courses, the cornerstones or general education program would be 10-12 courses, and students would have 10-11 courses for electives or minors.
3) Align Spring Break with area public schools.
4) Proposals regarding May term that would only affect full-time students.
5) Move the date for graduation to late-April.
If these broad directions are approved, another long period of discussion will take place on how to implement these.
