Unique in its concept, unique in its creation, Alpha Sigma Lambda is dedicated to the advancement of scholarship and recognizes high scholastic achievement in an adult student's career. By doing so, this Society encourages many students to earn a baccalaureate degree.
Alpha Sigma Lambda has been in existence at Simpson College since 1986. The Initiation Class of 2007 is the 22nd class to be inducted. There is a total of 320 current and former student members and 19 honorary members, which consist of faculty and staff who play an important role in the advancement of adult students.
There are hundreds of chartered chapters of Alpha Sigma Lambda throughout the United States. Our Society not only brings together and recognizes outstanding students and faculty, but also offers each individual an exposure to interests other that his or her own.
To be eligible, students must have completed a minimum of twenty-four college semester hours at Simpson of which twelve semester hours must be outside the student's declared or intended major, and twelve hours must be in the liberal arts. A 3.2 cumulative grade point average is the minimum G.P.A. accepted. Members are elected from the highest ten percent of those students who meet the minimum standards. This year’s initiation class had G.P.A's ranging from 3.825 to 4.0.
The exact function of Alpha Sigma Lambda at Simpson College, in addition to the recognition of scholarship, is determined by the members. The students have sponsored projects to increase the Adult Learning Endowment Fund and have acted as a sounding board for the Division of Adult Learning office.
Leadership in Alpha Sigma Lambda is provided by a rotating group of officers. This year our officers are:
