Ronald Albrecht - Music
Ronald Albrecht is very responsive to the needs of adult learners. He makes his class interesting as well as entertaining. I have a musical background; however I learned a great deal of musical history.
Ron is such a great instructor! He is so passionate about music that it is easy to listen to him for the three hours that we are in class on Saturday afternoon. This is a pretty great accomplishment in and of itself, but he is also learning to change his testing structure to be more accommodating to the adult learner. Thanks RON!
Ron is a great instructor. He makes the class time fun and pleasant, while making sure that everyone understands the reading and the materials. He just makes sure to include everyone in the class and he has a personal concern for all students. He is wonderful.
Graeme Armstrong - Management
I nominated Graeme Armstrong because he went above and beyond to understand the needs of adult learners and make his class a valuable learning experience that we could use in the real world. He took the time to tailor our class to specifically meet the needs of the learners present. I learned leadership skills and strategies that I will continue to utilize and grow upon for the rest of my career.
Graeme Armstrong is reasonable and holds a high standard. He provides true value and learning in the classroom.
Professor Graeme Armstrong exhibits a passion for teaching and especially adult learning. His class is challenging, educational and fair. He excels at providing a wonderful environment for class participation which makes for a tremendous classroom experience.
Graeme Armstrong is an extremely dedicated instructor. He is very productive in class room discussions and on-line discussions. He gathers the attention of every student and keeps the class lively. Very motivated in creating group activities for the students to stay interested in learning and active in participation
Graeme was an adult learner and understands the challenges - all while providing supportive encouragement to achieve goals in a way that works for the adult student.
Richard Barrett - Accounting
Richard Barrett has made accounting very interesting and applicable to my everyday job. I appreciate his expertise, his manner of teaching conveys the principles of the course, and his exams are very specific about material covered in the books and class discussion. He has a high degree of expectation for his students while at the same time dispensing encouragement and hope through the tough assignments and problems. I feel he should win this particular award. Thank you.
I nominate Rich Barrett. He has been a wonderful teacher thought all three classes of Intermediate Accounting. His teaching methods are through and simple to understand. He takes time to explain concepts in depth during class and given each student individual attention needed.
Todd Behrends - Management
Todd Behrends is a great faculty member and Simpson should be proud to have him on their staff. Todd understands adult learning and the time constraints adult students are faced with trying to work, go to school, raise a family. Todd has a way to make everyone of his students feel valued. He comes to every class energetic and keeps his classes fun but still focused on learning. If ever instructor was like Todd I would be finished with all my classes by now. He is a great motivator.
Michael Boston - Accounting
Michael Boston always shows respect for his students. He is great at explaining the accounting problems in a way that can be understood, he is always willing to help anyone who needs it whether it be in class or individuals to stay after class.
Michael Boston takes the time necessary to work with each student and help them understand the concepts they are teaching. He also takes time to learn about each of his students. He values their work experience and is able to bring real life application to the classroom.
Jennifer Bradley - English
I recommend Jennifer Bradley because she provides us with in-class and out-of-class exercises and projects which help us refine our literary analysis and writing skills, as well as the added bonus of helping us develop teaching skills. Class exercises: In class exercises include hand-outs with historical information and discussion questions which involve in-class teamwork exercises in literary readings and analysis. Out of class exercises include on-line class discussions of a particular text which also encourage research, literary analysis and teamwork. Each on-line discussion question is assigned one class member who is to act as the class discussion leader researching issues, providing information of these issues, posing further questions and acting as the facilitator for his/her assigned question. Writing: Writing Journals in which the students perform a literary criticism of the most recent text covered, are required to be written and turned in each time class meets. These journals are reviewed and commented on by Jennifer in order to add to the student's reflection on the text and issues within it. Major class papers and/or research papers give students a chance to analyze one or more texts more critically for specific issues, using information and quotes from outside sources and critics. Again, comments are made to help a student refine their writing skills and to increase their reflection. Jennifer always makes herself available to assist students in getting started with their introductory paragraph and in some classes, allows one of the two papers to be re-submitted with the recommended writing style revisions made by Jennifer. Class projects: Class projects include in-class presentations of: literary openings, author presentations, historical presentations and leading class discussions. Each student takes one or two turns performing each of the above for a particular literary time period, author, historical issue, or text. These class presentations give students a chance to play teacher by researching, composing and preparing handouts for the class which are instructional and which involve in-class teamwork questions and exercises, i.e. class discussion leader. I believe these methods provide students with exceptional means for enhancing their literary analysis, writing and teaching skills. Since several of the students seeking an English major are doing so in order to meet the requirements for teaching endorsements for the Master of Education degree, or to lead book discussion groups at local libraries as a part of their jobs; it is wonderful to be given an opportunity to practice various methods of teaching or leading book discussions in class and to observe the methods used by other students. For the above reasons I whole-heartedly recommend Jennifer Bradley for this award!
Jennifer Bradley is an excellent and caring professor.
Professor Bradley shows a genuine interest in her students and their success in class.
Jennifer Bradley is an awesome teacher! I have taken two classes with her and definitely felt like I got my money's worth. She's funny, creative and is passionate about her teaching and students. She structures her classes to accommodate the adult learner. Also, taking a 3 hour class with her goes by extremely fast because she involves a lot of class participation and group work. Thanks! Cheryl Larson
Dr. Bradley is very intelligent. Her classes always have the best discussions.
Honestly, Jennifer's classes are harder than everyone else's because she is committed to helping adult students learn rather than giving them a free pass. Amy MacKrell is awesome as well but you said she isn't eligible because of already winning.
Jennifer makes her classes interesting by delegating out assignments that are useful and relevant to the class.
Dr. Jennifer Bradley is a committed and caring professor who enables adult students to thrive. Jennifer is aware of the obstacles adults face and works with them to make their learning experience positive.
Jennifer Bradley - Jennifer's classes are well-structured and I'm a much better English major for her feedback and the time she devotes to explanation. Also, the woman has so much information in her head, it should honestly be the size of a beach ball. It's amazing.
Honestly, Jennifer's classes are harder than everyone else's because she is committed to helping adult students learn rather than giving them a free pass. Amy MacKrell is awesome as well but you said she isn't eligible because of already winning.
Frank Colella - Economics
Frank enabled me to not only understand economics in general, but he sparked an interest in economics that led me to pursue economic research and analysis even after the class finished. I absolutely had no interest in economics previous to his class and now I am a subscriber and daily pursuer of the WSJ. He teaches as though he loves it and genuinely wants others to comprehend the subject after they finish the class. Simpson will lose a great asset when he retires; I am privileged to have been his student.
Lynda Domino - History
Lynda makes learning history interesting - she takes the time to put together Power Point presentations with pictures and other visual information besides just lecture notes. Lynda Domino takes the time to work with students on paper topics and provides feedback and helps with papers before they are due. She makes western civilization history interesting and she genuinely cares about her students.
David Dryer- Management
Mr. Dryer does an outstanding job of making sure his students really know the material that is relevant to the "real" world. He uses his own, real-life examples as well as examples of his students to help them gain a strong understanding. He is open to suggestions on how he could do things better and is a great listener. He makes a 'boring' topic, like Business Law, come to life and shares his energy and passion for the study.
Eugene Fracek - Social Science
Gene Fracek was the only teacher I had that kept the class for entire our lecture. We didn't out early - not once! This late night dedication matched with his ability to keep the class interested in the lecture for the whole four hours! The time flew by. What a guy!!
Eugene Fracek was very dedicated in his teachings. He was always helpful and actually listened to what students were saying. His class was full of passion and he captured everyone attention from the first day of class. It was very enjoyable to attend his class.
I nominate Eugene Fracek for this award. He truly is a unique instructor that brings so much personal experience to his teaching ability. I enjoyed and learned a lot from his Indians in America course this fall.
Mark Freyberg - Sociology
I have been an adult student for three years now and will graduate this semester. I just finished my graduate school portfolios a few weeks ago. Mark Freyberg helped me immensely with my portfolios. I have had Mark for several classes and every class he has always gone out of his way to help me or make sure that I understand what we are learning. He is an exceptional professor and I consider it an honor to have been his student.
Ingrid Guttin - Mathematics
Ingrid created a positive learning atmosphere for all of the students in our class. The material was difficult, but she found ways to get through to the students and provided a good alternative to the normal testing procedures with a comprehensive project that allowed students to apply what they'd learned in a practical manner.
Ingrid is enthusiastic about her class and material. She presents Statistics in a way that makes a challenging class engaging.
Bruce Haddox - Senior Colloquium
Bruce Haddox - I chose to nominate Mr. Haddox due to the fact, I felt I really had to work for my grade. Getting an A in his class meant that I met his standards and he wasn't just handing out the grades. The class also had an impact on how I thought about the world and changed me as a person. That is the mark of a good professor, when they change your world.
I believe Bruce Haddox allows students to think openly about their opinions and gives confidence to learners.
Fred Jones - Criminal Justice
Fred Jones is one of the most enthusiastic teachers I've had the pleasure to meet. You can tell he really enjoys teaching and is very active in class. He makes you feel welcomed in to the group. He also encourages everyone to participate in all class activities and is open minded to everyone's opinion no matter how diverse. I'm thankful I had a chance to be one of his students.
Todd Little - Education
Todd Little has been very helpful in my time at Simpson and had an excellent introductory course.
Eduardo Magalhaes - Political Science
I nominate Mr. Eduardo Magalhaes because he genuinely conveyed the importance of each and every American citizen to understand and appreciate the workings of our government. His enthusiasm was contagious and was beneficial to the learning of his students.
Patrick McDermott - History
Patrick McDermott was excellent in helping me through Western Civ...I was not comfortable with the course and he made sure he took time to speak with me and made the course interesting and very fun to learn. Great instructor!!!!
Patrick McDermott makes a very difficult subject fun and interesting. He loves the subject matter and shows that in every class. His enjoyment of the subject matter helps that students to also enjoy what they are learning!
Patrick McDermott embodies what the adult learning experience should be. Imparts knowledge to adults at an adult level without bogging us down in useless trivia. A great course taught by a great instructor.
Shea Mears - Accounting
Shea Mears has always been clear when explaining the class content. He is quick to reply to out of class questions and is fair.
Shea Mears makes accounting classes fun, is very knowledgeable, and is willing to stay late after class to give advice. He is the best instructor in the accounting department, and is the reason I tell people about Simpson DAL.
Shea Mears has demonstrated a genuine concern for the students in his class and strives to make sure everyone has absorbed the material. He uses real life examples to help with the comprehension of difficult subjects and is willing to revise his syllabus based on the needs of the class.
Dick Moberly - Mathematics
Mr. Moberly cares about his subject and his students. He will walk more than the extra mile to help any who ask him and explains the subject matter clearly and interestingly.
Jerald Ness - Management
Mr. Ness is an incredible teacher. I know because of the class he teaches, only a few students are able to gain from his knowledge and experience. He goes beyond the textbook and explains the concepts well. His class was one of the best experiences I had at Simpson.
Jerald Ness is a great teacher. He is dedicated to helping his students learn a very complicated subject. I appreciate his patient and thorough teaching.
Jerald Ness was superior as an instructor for my Quantitative Decision making class. His explanations of the material were incredibly clear and his willingness to allow his students to take the "Opportunity sessions" when we felt ready for the challenge and also allowing us to complete missed assignments allowed myself and others to be successful in his class. With many thanks, Cindy Kruse
Irwin Oltmanns - English
Instructor Oltmanns takes the time to make sure you grasp a concept and will take the extra time to work through a concept. He also understands that adult learners usually have full time jobs and allows extra time to complete assignments when needed.
Irwin Oltmans showed a lot of concern for the students and wanted us to comprehend the material given. He would offer help and gave constructive feedback that a student can use during school and out of school.
Jim Palmieri - Economics
Jim Palmieri has done a fantastic job of teaching Microeconomics. He has taken a subject that is considered by most to be a difficult one, and broken it down into simple, easy-to-understand concepts. I took macroeconomics last semester (in both classes we have started by learning the basic concepts of economic theory) and was lost by the second week. Jim really got our entire class off to the right start by teaching us these concepts, not reading about them verbatim out of the text.
Jim Palmieri does a great job of instructing his class. The way he teaches has helped me retain the subject matter and simplifies the concepts of Microeconomics. He works through questions in a manner that makes problems more understandable.
John Pauley - Philosophy
John Pauley was flexible in his class without sacrificing the ultimate goal of teaching. He earned my respect quickly in his presentation of materials, and chooses a text which kept even us busy adults interested. The in class discussions were lively and beneficial. He made me feel like a real scholar.
Mary Pope - Religion
I had Mary Pope for my first class at Simpson this past fall and I felt a connection with her my first night. She is a warm, compassionate person with a full understanding of what it takes to be a full time employee, part-time student and mother.
James Poulsen - Music
James Poulsen is a very dedicated and passionate instructor. He is able to keep the attention of his students and make the class interesting.
His teaching demonstrates his passion for music. He has a great teaching style that inspires one to want to learn more about music. Jamie is a very talented individual who needs to be recognized.
Chad Roberts - Communication Studies
Chad Roberts was a wonderful instructor. He made the Public Speaking class I took fun. He gave us choices of our topics and also had it relate to our lives. He was very flexible and understanding when it came to adult learners.
Steve Rose - Education
Steve Rose, has been a demanding yet flexible instructor, that respects the diverse needs of the adult learner. He takes our life history into account and makes it part of the learning process. He is inspirational, funny, very engaging, approachable and extremely caring of us as students. You know that he is passionate about what he does, and he elicits that same passion for teaching and education in his students. I think he is the greatest!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Steve Rose takes a personal interest in the success of each and every student. Dr. Rose is always willing to help students with questions, even after school hours. Dr. Rose is a great overall professor and credit to education in general.
Dr. Rose is dedicated, responsive and flexible. He goes out of his way to make sure I know the practical considerations of pursuing a teaching career.
Nancy St. Clair - English
Nancy St. Clair was an excellent teacher. She made you feel like your responses in class and in journaling were valuable. She is very respectful and is a lot of fun to have as an instructor. She has also gone out of her way to be a great mentor for my senior project, making me feel like it will get done and to not worry too much. She has been there with me every step of the way.
David Sanderson - Management
David Sanderson was an inspiring and effective instructor with great real world advice and experience.
I think Dave Sanderson should receive the award because he brings the real world into the class room. It made the advertising class relevant by sharing information that his agency has used to promote products. He also had hands on learning that made it easier to grasp the material that he was teaching. The class was fun and educational.
David Sanderson was outstanding in the classroom. He really made advertising interesting and kept all of us enthralled wanting to learn more every night.
Daryl Sasser - History
Mr. Sasser creates an environment that makes Western Civilization fun to learn about. He teaches is a way that it is easy to retain what you learn. He is the least pretentious teacher I have ever had. He never talks down to his students, even if their answer is completely wrong.
Daryl Sasser is a fantastic teacher.
Bill Schellhorn - Mathematics
Bill Schellhorn is my choice for this year because he helped me a lot patiently with my math problems and believe me I had a few! His excellent way of explaining the material needs also to be mentioned!
Del Shepard - Management
Del is a great teacher, he encourages class participation and makes it a comfortable environment for thoughts and ideas to be shared. He uses real life examples of today to help the student understand the application of the concept. You can tell he cares about each and every student.
Del brings the whole class together. He makes our learning experience hit home, by sharing his personal experiences with us and telling us funny stories that we can relate to. He is a wonderful teacher, who truly has a passion for teaching. I think he is the best teacher I have had so far at Simpson.
Del Shepard makes going to class enjoyable and his working and academic excellences add to his nonstop quest for continuous quality in education.
Del Shepard is a great instructor. He knows what it takes to help adult students get the most out of their learning experience.
Del has a full time job on campus but still loves to teach the adult students during the night classes. He teaches several classes per term and even stepped in for a Magt 385 in Mod 2 when no-one was available to teach it. I believe Del is one of the best teachers I have ever had. By incorporating his personal experience to his teachings, he provides each student with a well rounded experience.
Del Shepard relates to students better than any other instructor that I've ever had. He listens to students ideas/concerns, etc. and always makes the time to make each and every one of us feel as though he is there for us, personally.
Del Shepard's classes apply real life uses to the things he teaches. He is a good communicator and excellent teacher.
Lydia Sinapova - Computer Science
Lydia Sinapova is an outstanding instructor; dedicated to truly helping students learn the material; selfless; very kind; very deep knowledge of her content area.
Brian Steffen - Communication Studies
Brian Steffen has been a great supporter of adult students - he understands our time constraints (as full-time employees) but doesn't just "pass" us through his classes. He finds a good balance, not overloading/overwhelming adult students yet really helping us learn. I learned so much in his Ethics of Mass Communications course and would be thrilled to see him win this award! Billie Broich
Willie Suchy - Mathematics
Willie Suchy found a way to make Statistics interesting and relevant to me as an adult student.
Willie Suchy has a refreshing way of teaching that isn't just about tests. His method of working on a group and individual project makes it easier to understand and apply what can be pretty scary material.
Willie Suchy cares about the people in his class and always made himself available for questions and helping. A good balance of homework and project but not overwhelming.
Willie Suchy is organized, patient with students, and actually teaches his subject -- I understand it clearly when he speaks and teaches.
Mr. Suchy teaches difficult subjects such as Statistics. He is very patient and goes out of his way to make sure you understand the subject.
Willie Suchy Exceeds my expectations as an instructor which takes a complex subject such as statistics and breaks it down so that you not only understand it, want to understand it but also how you can use it so that you will want to use it. His simplest is best rule makes a complex matter easier to understand
Mr. Suchy has a way of making statistics interesting and learnable, a seemingly impossible task. I enjoyed his class as much as I enjoyed having it out of the way and under my belt.
I have really enjoyed the teaching styles of most of my instructors. I chose Willie Suchy because I feel he has the ability to take a complex subject, such as statistics, and make it not so intimidating. Additionally, he has shown me through class how to apply the learning to my personal life and in the business world.
Willie Suchy made learning Statistics fun and exciting. He was always willing to help with any questions or problems we had. He took the time to get to know each student and is a great teacher.
I think that Mr. Suchy demonstrates excellence in the classroom by being patient with students, and making the material come to life by using interesting real life situations to apply the material he covers. He definitely deserves to win.
Willie Suchy is the only math instructor I've ever had that taught Statistics so well that I was actually motivated to come to class each night. He is very, very patient and is loved by many students at the West Des Moines campus.
I haven't taken a class from Suchy in a while, but I am still very grateful for what I learned in his math classes. I use the knowledge I gained in his classes every day in work. He is a great teacher and makes it easy to learn.
Willie Suchy was very dedicated to our class in Elementary Stats this year. He consistently gave individual assistance to students before and after class as needed. He allowed students to phone or email him with students, and he turned one of the toughest course into a great experience for me.
Willie Suchy is a very laid-back individual and makes learning easy and fun.
Suchy takes the time necessary to make sure that the students understand the material. He makes the subject seem interesting and help the students feel comfortable with a subject that can be intimidating at first glance.
Willie Suchy understands the demands of the adult learner better than most faculty. Willie encouraged and facilitated learning at the highest level, without overwhelming us. He is personable, and really cares about his students. Willie taught us statistics that we can actually use outside of the classroom. I believe Willie taught us how to use statistic for the classroom and outside of the classroom.
Willy Suchy gets my nomination for the Excellence in Adult Education Award because he understands the challenges of the adult student who hasn't been in a classroom for many years. I had to miss a class because I was required to travel on business for my company. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to keep up with the coursework and talked to him about dropping the class. He assured me that I could do it and that he would be there to help me if need be. As a result, I didn't drop the class and as promised, he was available for assistance, not just for me, but for any student. Also, his teaching style is very relaxed and he took whatever time we needed as a class to understand the stats concepts and assignments. Willy is a great teacher who just gets it!
Willie Suchy is very articulate and has a way of explaining statistics that makes even the most number challenged person (myself) understand the material.
Willie Suchy takes a subject which may seem complicated to most and makes every effort to make it apply to real life scenarios. I've appreciated his respect to his adult learner students and practical approach that we can relate to.
Julie Summers - Communication Studies
Dr. Julie Summers demonstrates a full dedication to her students and understands the material very well. I am fairly new to Simpson, but feel she is the best candidate.
Julie Summers is the most incredible instructor I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. Her career experience and passion for sales/marketing is evident and contagious. I particularly appreciated the field projects we did. What a great way to bring marketing to life! Julie's understanding of the adult learner is evident in her time management and lesson planning. Group activities, student presentations, class discussions, quizzes (needed to keep everyone accountable for reading!) and field projects made this the most well rounded course I've ever taken. Julie is a tremendous asset to the faculty at Simpson and a huge motivation for me to refer other working adults to the college.
I nominate Julie Summers. Julie taught my buyer behavior class in Mod II and it was the best class I have had at Simpson. Her teaching style and knowledge of the subject made you crave additional information. Julie has so much knowledge on the most interesting things. Ms. Summers also handled an animated student quite well, even though the whole class was amused, she did a superior job at remaining professional.
Julie Summers is the most incredible instructor I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. Her career experience and passion for sales/marketing is evident and contagious. Peter Taggart - History
Peter Taggart made a big impression on me. He took a class (Western Civ), that could have been boring or tedious, and it was neither. He has a mesmerizing voice and was very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, which made me, as a student, enjoy learning from him.
Mr. Taggart shows passion for his subject matter and does an excellent job of sharing that passion with every student. His lectures are inviting and entertaining. You enjoy learning about Western Civilization and early history. Very engaging and enjoyable.
David Thuente - English
David Thuente - He was passionate about Literature and no matter how uninterested a person could possibly be about some of the readings, he always made it extremely interesting. He encouraged the students to share their ideas and always encouraged class discussions. He recognized that most his students were not going into Literature and that it was a required course but by the end of the class, you would leave his class with an appreciation of not only Literature but with a different understanding of history and life.
Dr. Thuente always took the feelings and needs of his students into account when making decisions regarding his class. It was great to have a teacher who realized that we are also working adults, some with families.
Dr. Thuente always seems to genuinely enjoy teaching and watching his students learn and progress. His lectures offer great background about the literature in question, how it was written, and the ramifications of the piece, both past and present.
Richard Tinder - Computer Science
Mr. Tinder helps me understand every point in our programming classes in the utmost detail. I feel that with him teaching me I actually learn the material rather than memorize enough to regurgitate the information at test time. The pacing is just right so that I am challenged to work on homework and take enough time to do the assignment so that I stay busy from week to week, but not so much that I feel like I am falling behind. When I have a question in the middle of the weekend I can still expect a quick response and answer to any of my questions. It has been quite some time since I last had a teacher where I felt I would be better off in any class they were teaching rather than simply taking whatever class was 'next on my list'.
Tara Wendel-Riddle - English
Tara Wendel-Riddle was very supportive of me when I first started out at Simpson. Through her encouragement, I was able to realize my talent for writing and even submitted a piece to the Simpson Sequel, which was published. Tara continues to support me throughout my educational career by offering advice and guidance whenever possible.
Kevin West - Social Science
Kevin West, in my opinion, is one of the best ALD teachers at Simpson. He takes the extra time to get to know his students in order to help each one succeed. I had some personal difficulties during a class with Kevin. I explained everything to him and he was very flexible in the assignments, offered extra credit, and was extremely understanding when I was unable to make it to a class or needed to leave early. I made a comment to Kevin about possibly dropping the class because I felt I was too far behind. His comment to me was "I will not let you quit and I will not let you fail". I really appreciated that and needed it at that time. My vote is for Kevin West for the Excellence in Adult Education award.
This instructor, Kevin West took extra time out of his day to talk to me about my future goals and dreams in education. He built my confidence in school and was also very helpful when needed.
Jeff Wilson - Management
When Jeff Wilson taught the class, he was very enthusiastic about marketing.
Todd Witke - Management
Todd Witke shows passion in teaching business law and with some humor. The material can be quite challenging and he is always available for any questions through email or in class. He seems to really love teaching and that creates a class that can get involve in learning and getting the most out of the course. His exams are, to say the least, very challenging...but he's fair with the essay part, thank God, and his weekly quizzes keeps the student up on the reading material...thus, learning what we need to on a weekly basis. Overall, it his respect for each student and his humor in teaching very difficult subject matter in a 10 week period. And, he appears to love doing it!
Todd Witke's dedication is above all others that I have had the pleasure to meet. His teaching style is made specifically for the adult learner. He uses every day scenarios. Keeps students interested and engaged.
Todd Witke is interactive with the students and makes the lecture fun and interesting. I love his stories!
Allison Wolf - Philosophy
Dr. Wolf is an excellent instructor. She allows discussion and is entirely in tune with differing opinions within the classroom. She is respectful of everyone's point of view. Also she doesn't let you get away with anything. Allison is very balanced in her approach to teaching. She also doesn't play favorites.
