Communication Studies

Special Trips

Students in Communication Studies have the opportunity to travel extensively, whether they opt for  May Term trips or weekend conventions.

May Term Travel
There are May term trips for both international and domestic experiences. Communication Studies has had two such trips. In 2001, a class went to England, France, Monaco, the Vatican and Italy. While there, they focused on European media as it compares to American media. The group visited the London Sun, the BBC, the Paris bureau of Reuters, the Vatican Radio and Television and L'Observattorre Romano, the Vatican newspaper.

In 2004 a Communication Studies class traveled to England, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and Germany. The group studied intercultural communication in each of the societies it encountered.

A third trip is planned for 2007, which is tenatively planned to visit England, France and Italy.

Conventions
Students can attend a number of college media conventions. Many attend the Assoicated Collegiate Press conventions, which have been held in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Minneapolis, New York, Orlando and Washington D.C. Members of PRSSA have attended conventions in Atlanta, Chicago, New York and San Francisco.

A Semester Abroad
Some Communication Studies students are interested in foreign media. If students are also working on a German major they are encouraged to participate in the Semester in Schorndorf, which is offered every other spring semester. If a student is working on a major in Spanish he or she is encouraged to participate in the Semester in Nicaragua, which is also offered every other spring semester. If a student would like to have the opportunity to study in London, we offer the Simpson Semester in London, offered every other fall term.
