Holy Grounds' Beginnings

Holy Grounds was envisioned to be a quiet and fun place for students and  community members  to come and have a delicious cup of coffee.  Holy Grounds  visionary was a man named Gordon Shea.  Gordon was the Chaplain here at Smith Chapel from  1994 to 2001 when he passed away.  To honor his memory the President  of  Simpson, Kevin LaGree, helped fulfill Gordon's dream  by lending  the chapel the  money to get Holy Grounds started.  Since then Holy Grounds has  remained a non-profit coffee shop, committed to benefiting the  local community, coffee farmers, and  the environment while making enough money to repay our debt.

The Mission of Holy Grounds

It is not about making money but being here for the campus community.  Our goal is to provide students, faculty, staff and the Indianola community a place to gather and enjoy each others' company.

How it Works

Holy Grounds is a student-run business. The coffee shop manager position is a paid undergraduate assistantship overseen by the Smtih Chapel Office Manager. The coffee shop manager is responsible for recruiting volunteers, ordering supplies, and promoting its' mission.

Simpson College is known for its huge volunteer force which is what one will find at Holy Grounds. Though the job is volunteer, the baristas never scrimp on service, and tips are always welcome!

If you have any questions about Holy Grounds' selections, suggestions, or would like to volunteer with Holy Grounds, feel free to e-mail: coffee@simpson.edu or call 515-961-1416.

Meredith McCay, Coffee Shop Manager
Meredith M. meredith.mccay@simpson.edu

My name is Meredith McCay, and I am the manager of Holy Grounds Coffee Shop. My interest in Holy Grounds started when I volunteered there the beginning of my Sophomore year. I am a Junior and my major is Mathematics with minors in Secondary Education and Religion. I am really involved in my Church in Martensdale (which is the great thing about RLC: you can be involved here and at a local church!) and I drink a lot of coffee. If you have any questions about volunteering at the coffee shop or the coffee shop in general feel free to look me up!
