Ways to connect Career Services to Your Students!
Option 1 - 10-15 Minute Classroom Presentation
Staff from Career Services will do a 10-15 minute in-class presentation customized for first year students about career discovery and planning resources (as well as our mental health resources) available through our office. We are also available for customized sessions that complement your particular curriculum such as career planning for specific majors and/or fields like math, the arts, the sciences, etc.
Option 2- Required Individual Student Appointments with CS Staff
Continue with the CS/LAS tradition by requiring as an assignment that each of your students schedule and meet with a career counselor. The goal of these sessions is to connect academic learning to personal and career goal accomplishment. The appointments are usually 45 minutes in length and will include an overview of the Type Focus Program (Click here for overview of Type Focus) and an interpretation of their results taken during orientation, and some brainstorming and open discussion about their career and/or major selection. Students should be encouraged to visit or call the CS office to schedule an appointment.*
*Note: If this option is selected, we highly recommend a shortened version of a classroom presentation as described in Option 1 to allow for scheduling the actual appointments in class. We find that this method works best to get students to come in!
Option 3 – Instructor –Led Classroom Discussion and Activities
For do-it-yourselfers, here is a list of some great web resources for you to use to guide students in career discovery!
Simpson Faculty Page – www.simpson.edu/ccs/faculty/index.html
Find on-line career discovery and or planning resources such as "what to do with this major" and much more. Great to use in your advising sessions with students or to direct them there to use on their own! (Resources available for advanced students as well.)
Strength-Based Advising -https://www.strengthsquest.com/Library/Documents/StrengthsBasedAdvising.pdf
This is a great article by the Gallup Organization on how to advise students by helping them to identify and build on strengths vs. compensating for weaknesses.
The Type Focus Resource Manual – www.careers.typefocus.com/resource.html
The manual includes group discussion questions, classroom activities and homework assignments using type focus results*. Teacher helps are included too! (Click here for overview of Type Focus)
*Note Students should have taken this during orientation. If not, direct students to: www.careers.typefocus.com They will be asked to enter the site password: SC788
Option 4 - 50 Minute Classroom Presentation*
This option is simply an expanded version of Option 1 plus a type focus synopsis, instruction on best practices for first year students to stay on track, information on how to identify, develop and build personal strengths and skills using campus resources, and connecting career choice to interests.
*Note: If choosing this option, please schedule this with our office (961-1667) as soon as possible but preferably before August 11th.
Option 5 – LAS Class Visit to CS Offices
You are welcome to bring your class in for a tour of our offices. Although many of the tools we use to help students are on-line, we have a limited number of books that students can peruse while in our office lobby and a selection of hand-outs to take away.
