Career Essentials:
This event is an excellent opportunity for students to hear, directly from hiring managers and HR people, what it takes to be considered for a variety of career positions in a number of businesses and industries. There is no better or more convenient way for students to obtain this valuable information. “Career Essentials” should and does appeal to all students, from first year through seniors.” Ruth Weatherly, Professor of Management, made this comment about the Career Essentials forum event which she attended last year. Representatives, many of them alum, from companies such as, Meredith Corp, Iowa Department of Public Safety, Hy-Vee and ING. talk about breaking into their fields and what students should be doing now, while in college, to give them the advantage when applying for internships and full-time positions.
When asked what information was the most helpful students commented on information provided about internships and explanations of the different industries, their hiring practices and the job market today. After the panel discussion employers stayed to visit with students who had more specific questions. Many cards were passed out and opportunities discussed. One student commented on the event being a great way to network and get your foot in the door.
