Ruth Weatherly earned her undergraduate and Law degrees at Drake University in Des Moines. Her business career began with Northwestern Bell (an AT&T subsidiary) in a law clerk position, while she attended law school. Over the course of her career in the telecommunications industry, she held responsibilities in both legal and executive management positions. Her last management position prior to a career change to teaching was as vice president, human resources and corporate contracts, for a start-up high technology firm in Colorado.

While living in Denver, Weatherly earned her M.B.A. with honors from Regis University. She joined the Simpson faculty in 1991, and now holds the position of professor of management.
