Shafer received his BS in Economics from Iowa State University in 1972, Accounting Certificate from Simpson College in 1985 and a Master of Accounting degree from Iowa State University in 2001. He is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Management Accountant. Prior to joining the Simpson Faculty as a full time professor in 2003, Shafer worked in the Des Moines area for 25 years as a business manager, controller and vice-president of finance. He began his teaching career in 1991 as an adjunct instructor for colleges in the greater Des Moines area.
Shafer is married, has three children and four grandchildren. He enjoys boating, golfing, and coaching and attending athletic events.
