Schmidt completed his Ph.D. at St. Louis University, majoring in marketing with a minor in finance. In his capacity as the Sam Walton Fellow, Schmidt sponsors SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) at Simpson. He is chairperson of the Department of Business Administration and Economics. He has served as a member of Simpson’s Budgeting and Coordinating Committee, Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee, and Constitution and Nominating Committee. He served as a member of the board for the American Marketing Association/Des Moines Chapter and the Warren County Economic Development Corporation. He is a commissioner for Indianola Parks and Recreation.
Schmidt began his business career in his family's business, A.E. Schmidt Company of St. Louis. As the fifth generation in this billiard manufacturing company, he was responsible for sales management. In 1978, he and his wife opened their own retail store in Springfield, which they operated for seven years. Dr. Schmidt's business experience also includes 14 years with ICI Americas. He spent seven years as the territory manager for the Stuart Pharmaceuticals Division in Springfield, and another seven years as a territory manager for cardio-vascular products in St. Louis with the Zeneca Pharmaceuticals Division.
Prior to joining the Simpson faculty in 1999, Schmidt taught marketing and business classes at Webster University and Columbia College in St. Louis as an adjunct faculty member. He and his wife, Vicki, reside in Indianola and have three children and two grandchildren. Dr. Schmidt and his wife own and operate a business located on the Indianola square.
