Dr. Francis Joseph Colella was born and raised in New York City and received his baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees in economics from Fordham University in New York. He then began full-time teaching at St. Bonaventure University in 1967. Five years later he became chairperson of the Economics Department of St. Bonaventure. In 1977 Colella moved to Iowa and became chairperson of the Department of Management, Accounting and Economics at Simpson College. He served in that capacity for a period of 15 years, and then served as division chairperson for policy studies for an additional five years. Colella now teaches as a full-time professor of economics at Simpson College.
In addition to his teaching work, Colella is a consultant in the area of forensic economics. He serves primarily as an expert witness for many law firms in Des Moines, engaging in wrongful death and injury cases, discrimination cases, and anti-trust analysis.
Colella is married to Jane Ellen Colella. They have four children and four grandchildren. They reside in Indianola.
