February, 2008  

Friday 29 - Carl Gravander, faculty organist, in a concert featuring the music of Franz Liszt and the monumental Sonata on the 14th Psalm by Liszt's prize pupil, Julius Reubke.

March, 2008 

The Simpson College Choir on tour. Under the direction of Timothy A. McMillin.
Sunday through Friday, March 2-7.  All concerts are free and open to the public.

     Thursday, March 6, 7:30 PM - First United Methodis Church of Evanston, 516 Church St., Evanston, IL
     The choir will sing a wide variety of choral pieces, including compositions by Josquin, Bruckner, Barber, Mascagni and others.  The program is a diverse one that transcends the centuries from Renaissance Latin motets through German romanticism to 20th and 21st century spirituals and gospel-inspired works.

Thursday 27 - All-College Sing: The annual competition among residence halls, fraternity and sorority groups. Sponsored by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.
$1 admission at the door.

Wednesday 14 & Thursday 15 - Opera Workshop - Scene Recitals: Two separate opera scene recitals, products of the May Term Opera Workshop, featuring scenes from traditional and contemporary opera, operettas and musical theatre. Directed by Robert L. Larsen, Kimberly Roberts and Bruce Brown.

Simpson College Jazz Camp
: An entire week of jazz studies for middle and high school students featuring the Jim Widner Big Band and some of the biggest names in the business. Camp participants will have daily master classes, jazz improvisation and theory classes, jazz combos and big band rehearsals and reading band sessions. Jim Widner Big Band will perform nightly. September, 2007

Thursday 6 - Ron Albrecht, faculty pianist, in a recital featuring works by Copland, Muczynski and Liszt. The recital will also feature the premiere of a new song cycle composed by Dr. Albrecht titled The World This Afternoon. Bruce Brown, baritone, will be singing the cycle with Ron Albrecht at the piano. The poetry is written by Simpson College Assistant Professor of English David Wolf. 8 p.m. in Great Hall

Wednesday, 12 - Dave Camwell, faculty saxophonist, in a recital including works by Glazounov, J. S. Bach, Niccolo Paganini, Robert Schumann, William Dougherty and Marc Apfelstadt. Ron Albrecht, James Romain, James Bunte, Kimberly Helton and Jillian Camwell will also perform. 7 p.m. in Lekberg Hall

Saturday 15 - Music Education Workshop: John Feierabend
presents First Steps in Music: Becoming Tuneful, Beatful, and Artful.

Monday 17 - Visiting Artist: Peter Jankovic, international award-winning classical guitarist on the faculty of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, will perform a recital.

Friday 21 - Visiting Artist: Soprano Layna Chianakas, recent "Mother" in the Des Moines Metro Opera's production of Amahl and the Night Visitors will present a recital entitled The Gypsy in Me which will feature songs by Brahms, Dvorak, Montsalvatge and Obradors. Daniel Lockert, accompanist.

Saturday 6 - A Memorial Concert for Anne Larson: Featuring alumni from her voice studio including John Osborn '99, John Michael Moore '05, Nancy Hill '88, Kimm Julian '76, Mark Wilson '95, Thomas Gunther '06, Marc Schreiner '94, Dawn Pawlewski '89, Katherine Lindhart '05 and Amelia Groetsch '04.

Sunday 7 - Inner Urge Saxophone Quartet in Concert: The group includes James Romain, Meghan Schumacker, John Morgan and Simpson's Dave Camwell. 7 p.m. in Lekberg Hall

Thursday 11 - Orpheus Choral Festival: The third annual festival for high school choirs from around the state. The day will feature events for directors, rehearsals of choral repertoire of the highest quality and will culminate with a Festival Concert featuring the Orpheus Festival Chorus and the Simpson College Choir under the direction of Timothy A. McMillin. 7 p.m. in Smith Chapel

Friday, Saturday and Sunday 19, 20, 21 - Fall Opera Production: A double bill of the first important opera in English, Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and the great late 19th century work I Pagliacci by Ruggiero Leoncavallo in Italian. With student casts and chorus under the direction of Robert L. Larsen.

Tuesday 6 - The 2nd Annual Simpson College Jazz Honor Band Festival: The Jazz Honor Band will consist of high school students nominated by their band director. The students will rehearse on the Simpson College campus with guest director, Gene Aitken, Downbeat's 2007 Jazz Educator of the Year. Master classes in instruments and improvisation will also be offered. The evening concert will feature the Simpson College Jazz Band, directed by Dave Camwell, followed by the Honor Band conducted by Gene Aitken. 7 p.m. in Lekberg Hall

Friday 9 & Saturday 10 - Fall Music Weekend and Scholarship Auditions for Prospective Students: A series of sample classes, lessons and informal performances as well as auditions for Simpson music scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Friday 9 - Faculty-Student Concert featuring Simpson music faculty in solo performances and the Madrigal Singers and Jazz Ensemble in a special evening of music for prospective students and their families. The public

Wednesday 28 - Visiting Artist - Pianist Uriel Tsachor in concert from the faculty of the University of Iowa School of Music. He is a graduate of the Rubin Academy in Tel-Aviv, Israel and the Juilliard School in New York. He has performed as a soloist in Tel-Aviv, Jerusalem, New York, Chicago, Vienna, Paris and other cities around the world.

Thursday 6 - The Simpson College Symphonic Band under the direction of Jay Nugent, presents their fall concert featuring the music of Dmitri Shostakovich, Carol Barnett, Frank Ticheli, Eric Whitacre and Alfred Reed. Guest soloist will be faculty clarinetist Kariann Voigts. Thursday, December 6 at 7 p.m. Pote Theatre in Blank Performing Arts Center

Sunday 9 - Lessons and Carols: This traditional English carol service with readings and anthems features the music of the Simpson College Choir, Chorale and the Brass Ensemble. An all-college event and a holiday card to the entire community. Sunday, December 9 at 2 and 5 p.m. in Smith Chapel

Tuesday 8 - Sunday 13 - The Simpson College Madrigal Singers on their annual winter tour to the Twin Cities. Under the direction of Robert L. Larsen.

Thursday 17 - High School Honor Wind Ensemble Day: The third annual event for high school bands from around the state. The day will culminate with an evening concert featuring the High School Honor Band under a guest conductor's baton and the Simpson College Symphonic Band under the direction of Jay Nugent.

Tuesday 22 - Orpheus Junior Band Festival: The 19th annual festival for junior high and middle school bands from around the state. The day's events will culminate with a concert featuring the Orpheus Festival Band under a guest conductor's baton and the Simpson College Symphonic Band under the direction of Jay Nugent.
