Farnham Galleries Exhibit - Tamara Carter

carter1Tamara Carter formed a close bond with the natural world during a childhood filled with carefree roaming of the forest and fields surrounding the small German farming community where she was born in 1954. Throughout her academic education, Tamara attended art classes based on a curriculum strongly based on bauhaus principles.

“All pieces in this exhibit contain natural elements," Carter said. "The photographs are never altered or manipulated in any way. They are meant to be portraits of nature so there is no need for improvement."

When Carter became a military spouse, life provided a taste of many different cultures. The military posts usually were equipped with good workshops and offered a wide range of classes, including watercolor, batik and photography.

Once the youngest of four children reached school age, Carter was able to continue her studies and earn an AA degree in fine art from Leeward Community College in Hawaii, where she found an instant passion for the spontaneous process of monoprinting.

carter2When her husband retired in Indianola, Iowa, Carter attended Simpson College to earn a Bachelor’s of fine arts degree. Her interest in photography was fine-tuned during a three-year membership with the Des Moines Camera Club, which provided an opportunity to become a private student of the established photographer Ray Andrews.

Carter’s accomplishments include several awards for Iowa State Fair entrees and other exhibits. She finds the greatest inspiration in nearby parks and the woods surrounding her house, where she has resided for the past 15 years.

"Most recently I began to construct collages from a combination of experimental painting techniques, the use of natural objects and found or collected scrap materials," said Carter.
