“I owe to Simpson College my real beginning in life.”
George Washington Carver, BA, MS, PhD
slave, freedman, artist, hotel cook, laundryman, farm laborer,
teacher, scientist, researcher, experimenter, agriculturist
In celebration of Simpson’s upcoming 150th anniversary in 2010, the college is excited to include the George Washington Carver Fellowship and the George Washington Carver Scholarship as two of the four Sesquicentennial Scholarships. Established in 2005 by Dr. John Byrd, president of Simpson College, the awards were named in honor of scientist and former student George Washington Carver.
Born 1861 in Missouri to a slave woman owned by Moses Carver, George Washington Carver was raised by the Carver family after his mother disappeared in a raid. He showed promise as a student and was sent away to school and completed most of his high school requirements. He applied, was accepted but was then refused admission to a university in the Midwest. A few years later he tried again and walked 25 miles to Simpson College and was admitted on registration day. At Simpson he developed his artistic skills as a painter but was encouraged to study botany. He finished his Bachelor of Arts degree at Iowa State Agricultural College.
Over his lifetime, he developed 300 derivative products from peanuts and 118 from sweet potatoes including ink, dyes, plastics, a synthetic rubber and postage stamp glue.

I came to Simpson because I was intrigued by Simpson and the history of George Washington Carver. The Carver Award seriously gave me a chance at a good education without having to dive into deep loans. I also recently got accepted to an Internship with Pioneer/Dupont. All starting with the Carver award, many windows have been opened for me and I'm sure they will continue to open further as my college career progresses.

I love the campus; they offer a 3-2 program with Iowa State (3 years here 2 years at Iowa State). I like the small campus and I wanted to play football. I was also impressed with Dr. Spellerberg in our interview/meeting. My Carver Award allowed me to come to a great college that otherwise I wouldn't have been able to go to or might have overlooked.

I came to Simpson because I fell in love with the campus when I first visited. It's beautiful. I always wanted a smaller college so that professors can give me the one-on-one attention I needed. The location of Simpson College is also another reason why I chose it. It's in a small town where I can have a great environment to study but it's also 10 minutes away from a big city. The Carver Award helped my family financially but it personally helped me to get into the college I always dreamt of.

I came to Simpson because of its excellence in academics, the great faculty members, and the beautiful campus. My Carver Award made a significant difference in my decision to pursue my education, without it, it would have been almost impossible to realize my dream of becoming a professional. I grew up in an environment that does not have hope in realizing dreams, therefore, all my life I was bombarded with negative feedback about my determination of attending college. The Carver Award was the key to realize my dream, but also, it is also the momentum that keeps my dream alive.

I came to Simpson to play football. I felt like it was a good atmosphere to pursue athletics. I am a biology major, hoping to go on to graduate school to become a veterinarian. The Carver Scholarship was the main reason why I was able to travel all the way from Florida to Iowa to attend college. It has allowed me to attend a small private school, where I receive more attention from teachers and staff, which in turn helps develop me into a well-educated student. Had I not received this scholarship, I would probably be attending a Florida state university with thousands of students where most of my classes would be administered through the Internet or in lectures with hundreds of students.
