Sociology

Sociology is concerned with the nature and workings of human group life. At Simpson, the sociology major is designed to give students an in depth look at these complex issues. Students acquire, organize, analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative data. All sociology majors apply knowledge in at least one field experience or internship. Options for students after graduation include general education, teaching at the secondary level, employment in the public or private sector or preparation for graduate study in sociology, anthropology, social work, theology or law.

  • Students may choose sociology as a generalized major or select one of three concentration areas: minorities, family or deviance.

  • Opportunities for involvement in social issue areas on campus include Amnesty International, Religious Life Council and Habitat for Humanity.

  • Numerous students have presented award winning papers and research projects to the Iowa Sociological Association.

  • Simpson's social work minor is designed to prepare students for jobs in human services or professional training at the master’s level.

  • Recent graduate schools: University of Michigan, University of Maryland, Rutgers University, University of Iowa, Iowa State University and Creighton University.

“As part of a sociology internship I had the opportunity to take a service trip to Thailand. We served in a variety of capacities including working with homeless youth, orphans and disadvantaged teens. These experiences changed me as a person and enabled me to see how I want to use my life.”
