Mathematics

High quality instruction and outstanding undergraduate research are the foundations of the mathematics department. The curriculum is designed to give students an opportunity to develop mathematics as a tool applicable throughout their professional and personal lives. The department prepares students for graduate study, careers in secondary education or employment in a mathematics related field. The teaching and learning process incorporates modern technology to assist students in developing critical analytical skills. Oral and written communication are integrated into the curriculum so graduates have the ability to effectively communicate technical results.

  • Carver Science Center houses a mathematics lab which contains 16 computers with computer algebra systems.

  • The mathematics departments hosts the annual Midwest Undergraduate Mathematics Symposium.

  • The department sponsors several activities which include Simpson math club, peer tutoring, undergraduate assistantships, mathematical contests in modeling, The Putman Exam and various competitions.

  • Honors in Mathematics can be earned if a student demonstrates outstanding work in mathematics and meets the departmental criteria.

  • Recent graduate schools: Bowling Green University, Oregon State University, University of Iowa, Illinois State University and  Colorado State University
