Work in the department of English includes courses in literature and in expository and creative writing. All courses have as their underlying purpose to help students develop their sensitivity to language, form and ideas. English majors can pursue work as journalists, editors, publishers, teachers, lawyers and any other careers that require excellent articulation and communication skills, such as public relations, advertising, banking, sales, insurance and social services.
- Simpson provides many avenues for students to publish: Sequel, a collection of campus-wide literary submissions, The Simpsonian campus newspaper, Zenith campus yearbook, The Brick weekly campus newsletter and The Simpson Magazine.
- Numerous guest authors and lecturers visit campus each year to share their experiences.
- The faculty includes prize-winning scholars, poets and fiction writers.
- Recent graduate schools: Purdue University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Nebraska and Iowa State University.
